Wagner, the defending singles champion, had a shaky opening, being broken early on as Norfolk raced into a 3-1 lead in the first set.

Four games in a row for the American helped him secure a 6-4 victory and dent Norfolk's chances of adding to the doubles title he won with Andy Lapthorne last Thursday (January 26).

In the second set, Norfolk fought back valiantly to take it 6-4, despite having lost a service game early on.

In the third set, the Briton seized the initiative decisively to take a commanding 5-1 lead.

Wagner held his serve in the following game, but Norfolk could not be broken as he claimed a superb victory.

"I struggled for a while out there to find my game, but I love the pressure of playing in a major final and I knew if I stuck with it, I could find my rhythm," said Norfolk, who last won the competition in 2010.

"I'm absolutely thrilled with my fifth singles title at the Australian Open and I hope I can use this as my base for a very successful 2012."

This was the first time Norfolk had won both quad singles and doubles titles at the same grand slam tournament in his career.
