Judith H_April_10April 9 - Germany won the first ever wheelchair basketball Tri Nations Cup in Ponds Forge, Sheffield, and laid down a marker ahead of this summer's Paralympic Games.

Germany led narrowly ahead of hosts Britain going into the final day of action and took on struggling France in the first game of the day.

France could not cope with them in the first period and were 15-6 down early on, before fighting back to reduce the gap to just four points at 24-28 moving into the second half.

Germany restored the margin of their lead though, 40-30, going into the final quarter, and ultimately were comfortable in victory at 60-43.

That set up nicely the crucial game between Germany and Britain, which would decide the winning Tri Nations Cup team.

Annika Zeyen got Germany off to a lightning start and they finished the first quarter 14-10 up, extending that to 31-20 by half time.

Britain struggled to contain their opponents and entered the final quarter 26-43 down.

A brief rally late on gave Britain hope, but they were beaten convincingly 62-41 with Germany securing the title and underlining the European champions' status as the continent's top team.

In the day's final game, there was a chance for France to finish with some pride having lost all five matches so far, against the hosts.

They were 10-7 down after a tight first period, but Britain soon developed a commanding 21-13 lead.

Though the French fought back strongly they still lost 41-36, and will now focus on improving for their next match with Germany at the Paralympic Games in London this summer.
