2012 WTF World Cup Team ChampionshipsNovember 23 - The 2012 World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) World Cup Team Championships has kicked off here at the Centro Deportivo, where an impressive 161 athletes – including six Olympic medallists – are to compete.

The three-day event includes 93 men and 68 women across 13 male and 10 female teams with the first two days consisting of a round-robin system and the single-elimination- based quarter finals.

The first day of the tournament got off to an impressive start as the China's mens team secured their spot through to the quarter-finals by winning both their matches against Aruba with an outstanding 36-3 victory and 32-15 against Chinese Taipei.

Meanwhile, the women's Russian and Croatian teams have also won their two games and are automatically granted into the quarter-final stage regardless of their next match result.

The new style features one minute first rounds, allowing each athlete to compete against its either male or female counterpart of the opposing team in an order drawn before the match.

The total points scored by each individual member of the time is accumulated to determine the teams overall score.

Marlene Harnois of FranceFrance's Marlene Harnois described being part of the Championships as "the best feeling ever"

The second round will be played for the first time based on a tag-team match format for five minutes.

This involves athletes being replaced regardless of order but each athlete must ensure they have attacked a minimum three times before being replaced.

London 2012 bronze medallist Marlene Harnois of France said: "It is greatest feeling ever to be part of the team competition.

"Taekwondo is my passion.

"Sharing my passion with my best friends and working together for the same goal, it is fantastic.

"Team competition is different from individual competition.

"It is different in a good way, it is a boost, I can enjoy competition more.

"It is more fun and less pressure.

"If the team competition is in the Olympic Games, I am sure that the number of audience will explode".

The initial two days here have showcased an array of fast-pace attacking world-class spars full of technical and dynamic taekwondo, as the WTF continues to work hard at developing the sport as spectator friendly.

This new format has been praised not only by spectators but also athletes themselves as the shorter bout times allows them to release power and energy with less pressure.

Taking part in the competition are Aruba, Brazil, China, Chinese Taipei, Uzbekistan, Spain, Egypt, Iran, Korea, Russia, France, United States, Venezuela, Colombia, Croatia and The Dominican Republic.

Among those competing for the US are Beijing 2008 bronze medallists Mark Lopez and Diane Lopez along with London 2012 bronze medallist Terrance Jennings.
