zanardi handcycleMarch 10 - Former Formula One driver Alex Zanardi has revealed that there is a "90 per cent" chance of him going to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games to defend the two gold medals he won at London 2012.

The 46-year-old Italian, who lost both legs in a horrific car crash in 2001, became one of the stars of London 2012 as he won two gold medals in the individual H4 time trial and the individual H4 road race, along with a silver medal in the mixed H1-4 team relay.

Zanardi had previously told insidethegames that he may target a spot at Sochi 2014 but while he has not ruled out that possibility, the Italian says Rio 2016 is a far more realistic possibility, despite the fact that he will be nearly 50 by the time the Games in Brazil approach.

"It's some years since I started skiing and I recently started Nordic skiing and a picture went out of me in a magazine, taken maybe by a fan or paparazzi, and immediately the rumour was Zanardi is going to Sochi for the Winter Paralympics," Zanardi told to Laureus.com.

"Now I'm not saying that is not happening for sure, but there's no reason to indicate it will happen.

"At every level of sport if you want to win it takes talent but also developing that talent.

"I don't think I have the time for Sochi.

"It's a long way from now to Rio and at 46, your years are like dog years, they count seven times.

"So I hope I can keep up my condition enough to compete and I am optimistic.

"So if I have a forecast to say 90 per cent no to Sochi, I say 90 per cent yes for Rio.

"My passion is intact and training is still a joy.

"I believe I am still new as an athlete and though I may lose something because of my age, there is also something to be gained by keeping moving and adapting to be in competitive shape."

Following his outstanding triumph at London 2012, Zanardi has been nominated for the prestigious 2013 Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability here.

Zanardi is up against British wheelchair racer Dave Weir, Canadian wheelchair basketball player Patrick Anderson, Namibian athlete Johanna Benson, Brazilian swimmer Daniel Dias, Brazilian sprinter Alan Oliveira for the prize, which will be awarded at a glittering ceremony here tomorrow.

"We are talking about something so prestigious, something really big," said Zanardi.

"But I know the other nominees are at least as deserving as myself to win.

"One person will be very happy but that does not mean the others should be disappointed because they are still great champions, otherwise they wouldn't be nominated.

"And for me, just to be nominated is a great source of pride.

"My heart will be feeling with great intensity when the decision is announced for the final winner."
