Supported by London 2012 Olympic pommel horse gold medallist and two-time world champion Krisztián Berki, 59-year-old Magyar stood unopposed for the top position, which he has held for the last two years, at the organisation's general assembly in Budapest and said he was "delighted" by his re-election.

He also explained, "the federation has never been as unified as it is now".

Magyar was one of the biggest names in the pommel horse discipline in the 1970s, even having two moves named after him – the Magyar spindle, which involves turning the body in the opposite direction from the circling legs, and the Magyar travel, a crosswise circling travel down the horse.


He won gold medals at the Montreal 1976 and Moscow 1980 Olympics, as well as a team bronze at the latter Games; secured world titles in 1974, 1978 and 1979; European titles in 1973, 1975 and 1977; and World Cup golds 1975 and 1978.

Magyar also achieved a Hungarian Sportsman of the Year hat-trick, claiming the title three times in 1974, 1978 and 1980.

He retired following the Moscow 1980 to finish his remarkable career with two Olympic, three world, three European and two World Cup titles in his specialty.


He was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame last year and has since focused on his lifelong goal of becoming a veterinarian – he currently operates a vet hospital in Budapest.

The assembly also saw two of the nation's internationally recognised sports officials, former FIG Men's Technical Committee member Istvan Karacsony, and Robert Forgács, who was a candidate for the FIG Council at last year's elections, honoured with the national sport award for Hungarian gymnastics.
