Maracana May 2015May 30 - Rio de Janeiro have been dealt an embarrassing blow after Brazil's scheduled showpiece exhibition match against England at the newly-refurbished Maracanã Stadium on Sunday (June 2) was suspended, after a judge decided it was not fit for public use.

The Stadium is scheduled to hold the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio, as well as the final of the FIFA World Cup next year, but a Brazilian judge has ruled that its re-opening will have to be kept on hold as it does not meet the required safety standards.

"At this moment we have no news that the restrictions were amended to a level of safety that would be expected at this stage," said Judge Adriana Costa dos Santos in a statement.

"Therefore, due to the laziness of the people responsible, in this case, the defendants, we cannot allow the stadium to be re-inaugurated without proof that it is safe and hygienic."

The Government of Rio de Janeiro have, however appealed the decision, claiming that an administrative error led to to the decision to postpone the match.

"All security requirements for the Brazil and England friendly have been met - but the report which proves compliance with the safety rules in the Maracanã had not been delivered." said the Rio Government in a statement.

If the appeal is not successful, the match will most likely have to be cancelled.

The England team arrived in Rio just hours before ruling, following their 1-1 draw with the Republic of Ireland at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday (May 29).

The Maracanã is scheduled to host the final of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in just 30 days time, as well as group stage matches on June 16 between Mexico and Italy, and Spain and Tahiti on June 20.

These fixtures could be thrown into doubt should the appeal from the Rio Government prove unsuccessful.

Maracana visited by Jerome Valcke May 2013FIFA secretary seneralJerome Valcke, Brazils Sports Minister Aldo Rebelo and members of the Brazil 2014 Organising Committee toured the new Maracana Stadium earlier this month

This is not the first time that a venue in Rio has been scrutonised over safety fears.

The João Havelange Stadium- which is due to host athletics at the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games- was closed in March due to concerns over the safety of the roof of the stadium.

A final decision as to whether the match can go ahead is expected to be made tomorrow.
