India cricketJune 29 - India's position as the centre of cricket was strengthened today when it was awarded the World Twenty20 for the first time in 2016 and its fourth 50-over World Cup in 2023, as well as the second World Test Championship in 2021.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was chosen to host the three events during the International Cricket Council (ICC) Annual Conference that ended in London today.

Cricket's world governing body confirmed that the inaugural ICC World Test Championship will be staged in 2017 and will be hosted by England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in June and July.

The second edition, scheduled 2021, will be held in in India in February and March.

The World Test Championship replaces the Champions Trophy in the ICC's calendar.

This year's tournament was won by India, who beat England last Sunday (June 23) in a rain-affected match at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

"The ICC Champions Trophy in England and Wales was highly acclaimed and appreciated by all," said David Richardson, chief executive of the ICC.

"However, the principle of one pinnacle global event for each of the three formats over a four-year cycle is a good one.

"Now that the ICC World Test Championship has been confirmed, we'll work on the playing conditions and qualification criteria, and will submit these to the ICC Board for approval in due course."

The ECB will also host the 2019 World Cup and Cricket Australia won the hosting rights of the 2020 World Twenty20.

The World Twenty20 was launched in 2007 when it was held in South Africa with India emerging as the winners, beating rivals Pakistan in the final.

The event is currently held every two years and took place last year in Sri Lanka, with the West Indies lifting the trophy after beating the hosts in the final.

But after India in 2016 it will move to a four-year cycle.

The ICC reviewed an inspection report by the ICC venue consultant on the venues for the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh next year and expressed its concern regarding the progress of construction and improvements to playing facilities in Cox's Bazar and Sylhet.

The Board noted that a further inspection and report is scheduled for August after which a final decision will be taken on the venues for the event.

The 50-over World Cup was first held in 1975, when it was staged in England.

It first took place in India in 1987, when they shared the tournament with Pakistan.

It has subsequently been staged there in 1996, when they co-hosted it with Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and again in 2011, when it was shared with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

So 2016 will be the first occasion that India has hosted the World Cup on its own.

They will be hoping for a similar outcome to 2011 when they beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in the final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
