London 2012 individual bronze medallist Ádám Marosi led the Hungarian challenge along with teammates Bence Demeter and Róbert Kasza as the trio came from fourth place going into the final combined event to storm through the field and take top spot.

The Hungarians performed solidly in the fencing and swimming disciplines placing fourth but an indifferent display in the riding saw them lying in 11th position going into the run/shoot event.

However, Demeter began the fightback with precise shooting which gave his teammates the momentum on the changeover, and saw Kasza regain the lead after his second round at the range, before handing over to Marosi who powered home.

Despite a strong showing in the final event, the Chinese trio of Jinali Guo, Fulao Chen and Zhaohong Cai had left themselves too much to do and had to settle for silver ahead of bronze medallists Dmitry Lukach, Aleksander Lesun and Ilia Frolov of Russia.

Ukraine had led coming into the run/shoot but could not match the performance of the top three and ended the competition in fourth, with the British trio of Jamie Cooke, Joe Evans and Nick Woodbridge, who won silver in the men's individual event earlier in the week, finishing fifth.

Despite finishing outside the medals, Pentathlon GB performance director Jan Bartu was happy with the British showing overall in Chinese Taipei which also saw Samantha Murray, Mhairi Spence and Kate French win women's team gold.

"It was an exciting day today and the boys were in contention from the outset," Bartu said.
