Reza Yazdani successfully defended his 96kg world title to take a gold for Iran at the Wrestling World ChampionshipsSeptember 16 - Iran took two gold medals to dominate on the first day of competitive action at the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA) World Championships today - the first since the sport regained its place on the Olympic programme.

Reza Yazdani successfully defended his 96kg world title at the László Papp Budapest Sports Arena by taking a 4-2 win from 2010 world champion and double Olympic bronze medallist Khetag Gazyumov of Azerbaijan, while the bronze medals went to Russia's Anzor Boltukayev and Ukrainian European champion Pavlo Oliynyk.

Iran's second gold medal of the day came from 2012 Asian champion and 2011 world bronze medallist Hassan Rahimi in the 55kg division.

He handed India's Amit Kumar a 2-1 defeat to take the world title, something he said was a "great result".

Turkey's Sezar Akgül, a silver medallist at the 2009 World Championships, and Russian Universiade champion Nariman Israpilov.

Meanwhile, David Safaryan secured Armenia's first medal of the competition, just months after becoming the nation's first freestyle wrestling European champion in nine years.

The London 2012 competitor won 2-2 over Cuba's world and Olympic bronze medallist Liván López to take the 66kg world title, while Magomed Kurbanaliev of Russia and Mongolian Ganzorigiin Mandakhnaran took bronze.

The FILA World Championships continue in the Hungarian capital tomorrow with the men's freestyle 60kg, 84kg and 120kg events.
