The AIBA says that the ABAE is making "good progress" to iron out the issues that led to it being provisionally suspended this yearSeptember 23 - The Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABAE) is making "good progress" after it was provisionally suspended for breaches of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) statutes earlier this year, an official from the sport's world governing body told insidethegames today.

The ABAE was hit with the temporary ban in July after AIBA claimed it had "seriously breached" its regulations when it blocked World Series of Boxing (WSB) fighters from competing at national events and took advice from Sport England when developing its new constitution.

The case was then handed to the AIBA Disciplinary Commission, which ruled that the English body "committed and continues to commit significant violations" of the AIBA statutes and bylaws before subsequently lifting the ban earlier this month.

A number of conditions were put in place and the ABAE was given just over a month to launch a "reform process".

Among the sanctions was the payment of a CHF 5,000 (£3,400/€5,300/€4,000) fine, but AIBA said this would be waived if "the ABAE makes a public statement confirming that it (i) failed to comply with the AIBA statutes, bylaws and rules and (ii) it will adopt the required amendments to its articles of association and bylaws".

The ABAE today issued a public statement saying it will update its articles of association and reiterated its commitment to compliance with the statutes of AIBA, which, insidethegames has been told, "satisfies the requirement" of the Disciplinary Commission.

"The ABAE acknowledges the decision of the AIBA Disciplinary Commission that it failed to comply with AIBA statutes, bylaws and technical rules insofar as certain WSB and related governance matters are concerned," read the ABAE statement.

"The ABAE recognises that the AIBA Disciplinary Commission's decision is final and must be respected.

"The ABAE confirms that, as it indicated to the AIBA Disciplinary Commission during the proceedings, it will and always has intended to adopt all amendments to its Articles of Association as are necessary to ensure compliance with AIBA's mandates regarding WSB and APB boxing.

"Further, the ABAE also repeats its commitment to follow and adhere to AIBA standards and to support all forms of AIBA boxing, including AIBA Open Boxing, AIBA Professional Boxing and World Series Boxing."

The AIBA also confirmed that the required ABAE Compliance Committee "is up and running".

"A member of the AIBA Disciplinary Commission was appointed as a member of the Compliance Committee to ensure compliance with the Disciplinary Commission decision," the AIBA spokesman added.

"So far the ABAE Compliance Committee has met several times and is making good progress on the issues."
