October 10 - Victor Kovalenko has been inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of FameThe head coach of Australia's Olympic sailing team, Victor Kovalenko has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to the sport in the country by being officially inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in Melbourne.

The 63-year-old oversaw Australia's best ever Olympic sailing performance at London 2012 last year, with his sailors claiming three golds in the form of Tom Slingsby in the laser, Malcolm Page and Matthew Belcher in the 470 dinghy and Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen in the 49er skiff, while Nina Curtis, Olivia Price and Lucinda Whitty took silver in the women's Elliot 6m.

That bettered Team Australia's previous best performance at the Games in 2000, when they won two gold medals, a silver and a bronze on home waters in Sydney.

A national 470 class champion in his native Ukraine, Kovalenko moved to Australia in 1997, gaining citizenship in 2003, and he has been head coach of Australia's yachting team for more than a decade, overseeing more success at Beijing 2008 with two gold medals and a silver.

"This is very special, as special for me as being granted the Order of Australia Medal," said Kovalenko.

"It is the highest recognition in Australian sport.

"I feel recognition into the Hall of Fame is forever.

"People have the ability to learn about sport in Australia.

"I am so proud to be amongst people who were my heroes."

Since becoming involved in Australian sailing, Kovalenko has been instrumental in securing over 40 international titles in total but cites the achievements at London 2012 as the highlight of his career so far.

"London was a very special moment," he said.

"We reached our goal and personally I reached my goals.

"The Australian sailing team was number one in the world.

"This makes our days from London very special."

Before moving Down Under, Kovalenko had already tasted Olympic glory at Atlanta 1996 after coaching the 470 men's and women's crews of the Ukraine to gold and bronze respectively, and the man known as the "medal maker" has set his sights on further success at Rio 2016 and has already got plans in place to ensure the Australian team are properly prepared when competition gets underway in less than three years time.

"We need to take a new approach to Rio from London, new philosophies, new principles," he added.

"A lot of teams will be using our successful tools from London.

"We have to invent something new.

"We cannot rely on what happened in London."

Kovalenko was officially inducted at the Sport Australia Hall of Fame Annual Induction and Awards Gala Dinner, and chairman of the Selection cCommittee, the 1983 world marathon champion Robert de Castella acknowledged the impact the Ukrainian has had in his adopted country.

"He put in place an incredibly detailed analytic and strategic plan for producing results, and was uncompromising in his expectations of everyone involved in sailing and the results were really shown through the performance of our sailors," said de Castella.

"There are some people that come along every now and again who reshape the way things are done and as a result of that we see incredible success and achievement.

"Victor is one of those people."

Kovalenko will become a Sport Australia Hall of Fame General Member, a category established to acknowledge individuals, who have shown excellence and achieved outstanding results in roles supporting sports participants.
