Canada's elite amateur boxers will assemble in Regina to compete at the 2014 Elite Mens and Womens Canadian Boxing Championships at the Orr Centre, ReginaOctober 19 - Three-time world champion Mary Spencer looks to defend her title at the elite men's and women's Canadian Boxing Championships at the Orr Centre in Regina next week.


The competition, which is due to start next Tuesday (October 22) and last until the following Saturday (October 26), will see 94 men and 51 women, ages 19 and over, fighting to be crowned national champions.

Spencer was the first female Canadian boxer to compete at the Olympics following its inclusion at London 2012. 

She has won the world title on three separate occasions after first taking the title in 2005 at the Championships in Podolsk, Russia.

"I've been working to get better and stronger in my weight category for the [Canadian] 
Championships," said Spencer.

The competition will be the first since 1984 where male boxers will not be required to wear protective head gear.

It will also see the introduction of a new 10 point scoring system to replace the old computerised system usually seen at the tournament.

"It's going to be really fun to box for the first time without headgear," said Quebec's Emanuel Elmaleh.

"I'll be boxing more experienced boxers so I am preparing to box more intelligently, but with all the same power and passion I show in all my bouts."
