London 2012 Olympian Oates, who took a silver medal at the Moscow Grand Slam earlier this year, faced Belgium's Jasper Lafevere in an under 66 kilogram final that was tight until the closing stages when Oates scored ippon to take gold.

"It is important to win tournaments," Oates said following his victory at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games venue.

"I've been winning matches and winning medals, getting to finals and bronze medal matches and winning a tournament is a big thing.

"It was quite a strong group out there today and to actually win a tournament is a tough thing to do, so that's why it was really important to me."

Polish Olympian Paweł Zagrodnik and Kenneth Van Gansbeke of Belgium took the pair of bronze medals.

The -60kg gold went to Ludwig Paischer, while Łukasz Kiełbasiński took silver, and László Burján and Kamel Mohamedi claimed the bronze medals


Paischer, a Beijing 2008 silver medallist, won gold in the under 60kg division after throwing Poland's Łukasz Kiełbasiński for ippon inside two minutes.

Bronze in the class went to Hungarian László Burján and Frenchman Kamel Mohamedi.

An all-Italian final in the under 73kg category saw Marco Maddaloni taking gold ahead of Andrea Regis, while the bronze medals went to Russian Egor Rybin and Israel's Tomak Zakheim.

The action continues in Glasgow tomorrow with the under 81kg, under 90kg, under 100kg and over 100kg medal contests.
