South Korea took gold in the IPC Ice Sledge Hockey Qualification Tournament with a shoot-out victory over hosts ItalyOctober 26 - With their places at Sochi 2014 already assured hosts Italy and South Korea went head-to-head in the gold medal match of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Ice Sledge Hockey Qualification Tournament in Turin and it was the visitors who prevailed after an exciting 3-2 shoot-out win.

With the shackles of Paralympic qualification cast aside both sides played out a thrilling and open final and it was no surprise that Seung-Hwan Jung of South Korea and Italy's Florian Planker featured again on the scoresheet, keeping up their fine form throughout the tournament.

Goals from Gianluigi Rosa and Sang-Hyeong Park saw the sides end normal time all square and they could not be separated in overtime either leading to a shoot-out to decide who would take the gold.

Surprisingly, the normally deadly Jung missed with the first effort of the shoot-out but his inaccuracy was matched by Italy's Valerio Corvino to still leave the sides locked together.

But Jong-Kyung Lee, Young-Jae Cho and Min-Su Han all found the back of the net of the visitors and when Andrea Chiarotti missed his effort the celebrations could begin for the South Koreans, who ensured a sixth place seeding at Sochi next year.

"I'm really, really happy that we won gold and qualified for Sochi, but we've also shown what our weaknesses are on the ice, so we're going to be building off this win and working hard the next several months until Sochi," said Jung, who picked up the Best Forward of the tournament award after his eight goals and four assists.

Rosa picked up the Best Defenceman award to soften the blow of missing out on the gold medal.

After securing the third qualification spot yesterday, Sweden ended a successful time in Turin by recording another impressive win, this time 4-3 over Japan with two strikes apiece for Per Kasperi and Niklas Ingvarsson enough to overcome goals from Daisuke Uehara, Satoru Sudo and Mamoru Yoshikawa.

"I think we played very good defence to help our keep the puck out of our goal, and we received good play from our forwards as well this week," said Ingvarsson, whose teammate Ulf Nilsson was named Best Goaltender of the tournament.

"It was really our good team spirit here that made us do well together in the tournament."

Meanwhile, Britain ended the tournament just as they had begun it by shipping a heavy defeat, this time going down 8-3 to a rampant Germany side.

Despite ending the first period trailing only 3-2, thanks to goals from Karl Nicholson and Nathan Stephens, Britain had no answer as the Germans cut loose in the second period, hitting five unanswered goals through Jörg Wedde, Bernhard Hering and Bas Disveld, while Udo Segreff completed his hat-trick.

A late strike from Gary Farmer was of little consolation to a British side that will be glad to see the back of Turin after a chastening week on the ice.

South Korea, Italy and Sweden now join Canada, Norway, Czech Republic, the United States and hosts Russia as the final line-up for the ice sledge hockey tournament at next year's Paralympic Games in Sochi, which get underway in March.
