"It is with deep regret that the UEG takes leave of this great friend of European gymnastics," read a statement from the organisation.

"The UEG joins the FIG [International Gymnastics Federation] and the German Gymnastics Federation to extend its warmest condolences to all his loved-ones, in particular to his family and gymnastics friends."

As one of the key figures behind the creation of the UEG in 1982, Lotz began his career with the continental governing body as a member of the Control Commission, before becoming treasurer in 1985.

The German was then elected as vice-president in 1989 and became President in 1993 - a position he maintained until 2003 when he chose to step down.

He was named as a UEG honorary member in 2004, acknowledging his many years of work in the sport.

Prior to his sports administration career Lotz was an active gymnast in his youth.

"On behalf of the FIG and its Authorities, President Bruno Grandi extends his warmest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased," read a statement from the world governing body.
