This came after the nation finished top of the medals table at the 2013 Para-cycling Road World Championships in Baie-Comeau, with 19 medals, of which 12 were gold.

If they are to hold off the likes of the powerful Great Britain squad and do this again, on the track as well as the road in 2014, they will need the six world champions to come to the fore.

Muffy Davis followed her three victories at London 2012 with two more titles on the road in 2013, while Jamie Whitmore was one of three other US women to take double gold.

Megan Fisher also won twice in Canada, while Allison Jones, who combines her cycling career with a similarly successful skiing one, also earned multiple victories.

Aaron Keith and Greta Neimanas are all also named in the squad after claiming world medals last year, while the remaining four places were claimed by London 2012 champion Joseph Berenyi, Alicia Dana, Will Groulx and Samantha Heinrich.

There was no place, however, for US Paralympic Sportswomen of the Year for 2013 Monica Bascio, who announced her retirement after following two silver medals at London 2012 with double world gold in 2013.

The squad is due to begin the 2014 season at the Los Angeles Para Track Cycling Open next month ahead of April's Para-cycling Track World Championships in Aguascalientes, Mexico

They will then have the advantage of competing on home soil when Greenville, South Carolina, hosts the Road World Championships in August.

Nine athletes have also been named to the national B-team, with 17 further athletes forming the national development team.

Additional athletes can be added to all three teams throughout the season.

Ian Lawless, high performance director for US Paralympics, welcomed the blend of old and new riders.

"The thing that I'm really happy with is that the team has a mix of veteran athletes who are solid medal contenders and annual medal winners, but backing them up is a crop of upcoming athletes who fill our pipeline and have great medal potential," he said.

"That is the best possible scenario for our team so that when our veterans are at the end of their careers and are ready to move on, there is another group of athletes ready to step-up and fill those podium spots."
