Now in its fifth year, the Warrior Games provide competitive sports opportunities for wounded, injured and ill service members and veterans of the US Armed Forces.

The Games are sponsored by financial firm Deloitte and are delivered in partnership with the US Department of Defence and United Service Organisations (USO).

"Rehabilitative sports activities like the Warrior Games provide the participating athletes an opportunity to heal and recover together," said General Charles F. Wald, director, Deloitte Services LP and senior advisor to Deloitte's Department of Defence sector.

"Our troops have made great sacrifices in defending our nation.

"Now as they transition back to civilian life it is our duty and our honour to support them."

The competition has become a springboard for many service members and veterans to continue participating in sports programmes in their communities, while many have gone on to compete at national and international level in disability sport.

This year's event will see around 200 competitors taking part with five teams of 40 service members and veterans from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Special Operations Command heading to Colorado.

Over the six days of competition athletes will participate in archery, cycling, shooting, sitting volleyball, swimming, track and field and wheelchair basketball events.

Last year, a British Armed Forces team also took part and the Games were attended by Prince Harry.

"The USOC is incredibly humbled to have played a small role in providing our nation's heroes with competitive sports opportunities through the Warrior Games, and more importantly, by significantly enhancing the availability of sports programming for injured service members and veterans with physical disabilities throughout the country," said Charlie Huebner, USOC chief of Paralympics.

"These programmes could not have been accomplished without the generous support of private sector sponsorships with Deloitte, AT&T, BP, Semper Fi Fund, The Fisher House Foundation, The Daniels Fund and USO, along with outstanding commitment from the US Department of Defence, the US Air Force Academy and local community and military leaders."

The Marine Corps team will be looking to secure a fifth straight Commander's Cup which is awarded to the team that earns the highest number of points while an Ultimate Champion award will also be handed out to the best individual performer over five events.
