July 30 - The Olympic Park, the venue for the Munich Games in 1972, was today named as a sponsor of the Bavarian city's bid to host the 2018 Olympics and Paralympics, which would make it the first city in history to stage both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Willy Bogner, the chief executive of Muncih 2018, Ralph Huber, his countepart at the Olympic Park, announced their new partnership under the sweeping translucent roof of Munich’s iconic Olympic Stadium, towering high above the city.

Purpose built for the 1972 Olympic Games, the Olympic Park is an archetypal example of the sustainable legacy that lies at the very core of Munich’s ambitious proposal, Munich 2018 officials claim.

Nearly 40 years after it was opened, it still hosts over 300 successful community sport and cultural events every year.

The latest innovation is a guided tour of the Olympic Stadium’s roof canopy that has already attracted thousands of tourists.

Bogner said: "Munich’s bid to host the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games is founded on the close collaboration between the Bid Committee and Munich’s Olympic Park.

"This is already regarded as a sporting and cultural focal point for Munich and Bavaria, and it is therefore a perfect partner for our bid.

"We will be holding lots of events together over the coming months, and we are looking forward to a long and successful partnership."

Huber echoed Bogner’s enthusiasm.

He said: "The view from the top of the stadium out towards the mountains in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is outstanding.

"The Munich Olympic Stadium will cement its place in history if Munich is awarded the 2018 Winter Games and we have the unique opportunity to stage a second opening ceremony here."
