Company Ibermática has worked with the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) to make the new system available to all 59 federations.

The cloud platform, launched in collaboration with HP and Intel, will allow sports federations to have greater control on their IT spending by preventing "periodic investments in equipment and licences".

Federations can have the system tailored to their needs, the COE said.

A spokesman added: "With this initiative, the COE responds, first, to the needs of each federation regarding reducing investments and recurrent costs, and on the other, providing greater agility to meet their requirements."

A pilot with the fencing federation in Spain, which underwent an overhaul of its IT infrastructure, led to an 18 per cent yearly saving, according to the COE.

Cloud computing uses a network of remote servers, rather than a local server, to store, manage and process data.
