The historic building in the Danish capital, which has previously provided the backdrop for major sporting events such as the KMD Ironman Copenhagen, Christianborg Swim Meet and the recent International Association of Athletics Federations World Half Marathon Championships, will now play host to some 500 archers aiming for world titles and Rio 2016 Olympic qualification.

Copenhagen had been awarded the Championships by World Archery in 2010.

"When we held the 2009 World Cup Final in Nyhavn harbour, we received a lot of international acknowledgement and set new standards for hosting elite archery events," Rolf Lind, President of the Danish Archery Federation, said.

"We hope to create an equally-iconic set-up by selecting Christiansborg Palace for the 2015 World Archery Championships finals.

"Our goal is to show the best of the sport to the whole world.

"We'd like to combine this with displaying the best of Demark to the world, by placing the finals in the heart of Copenhagen."

Among the athletes expected to compete at the event is defending women's recurve world champion and Denmark's Athlete of the Year for 2013 Maja Jager.

She spoke of her excitement to defend her title in her home country.

"Copenhagen will be a fantastic host city and I'm happy my international peers will get to see it," Jager said.

"I'm sure it will be a fantastic setting for the finals."

The Copenhagen 2015 World Archery Championships are due to take place between July 26 and August 2 next year.
