A remarkable performance from Rachel Morrison was the highlight of the opening day of the US Paralympics Track and Field National Championships at the College of San Mateo ©US ParalympicsRachel Morrison made a remarkable impact in her first major competition when she broke the 13-year-old women's world record in the F51 club throw by nearly three metres on the opening day of the US Paralympics Track and Field National Championships at the College of San Mateo.

Morrison, from Farmington Hills in Michigan, only took up the sport less than a month ago but her throw of 18.82 metres smashed the record of 15.83m set in 2001 by Ireland's Catherine O'Neill.

"I never thought about going to the Paralympics or a World Championship before this," Morrison said.

"I've always done sports and to discover Paralympic sport was kind of a lifesaver for me.

"Finding new sports like this is just awesome."

Morrison was affected by transverse myelitis, a neurological condition which affects the spine, only three years ago, which left her with significantly limited mobility.

"I've learned so many things from all of this, and even if I could get up and walk away, I wouldn't walk away from all of the lessons that have come from this," she said.

Other highlights included David Prince and Jarryd Wallace battling down the homestretch with a strong headwind in the T43/44 200 metres.

Prince, from Venice in Florida, was given the verdict over his rival from Athens in Georgia despite both man being given the same time of 22.90sec.

He came back in the afternoon to grab another American record in the shot put in 13.11m,

Aubrey Headon, a 14-year-old from Rochelle in Illinois, improved her own American record in the T35 200m.

She took more than three seconds off of her previous best time as she crossed the line in 39.20.
