Athletes gave the Singapore Sports Hub the thumbs-up ©Singapore SportMore than 30,000 people have taken part in an open weekend at the Singapore Sports Hub as it was announced food and beverage giant Fraser and Neave Limited has agreed a SGD$2 million (£937,000/$1.6 million/€1.2 million) deal to rename the main walkway.

The firm's sports drink brand 100Plus will give its name to the public access area, to be known as the "100Plus Promenade".

As part of the deal, the promenade, which provides access to a host of arenas and facilities within the hub, will also double as an 888-metre jogging track, which will be open around the clock.

The SGD$1.3 billion (£469 million/$1.1 billion/€762 million) Singapore Sports Hub, the centrepiece of which is the new 55,000-capacity Stadium, is due to host the 2015 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

During the weekend, water polo demonstration matches took place at the Aquatic Centre and there were badminton displays at the indoor halls.

Entry was free with several hundred people queuing patiently in line to see the Stadium.

Outside, members of professional basketball tea Singapore Slingers played 3x3 matches against the public.

"The opening of the Sports Hub has been long anticipated, and people have been clamouring to come here and have a feel of the place and have a look; and over the past two days what I've sensed is a great sense of pride, people are eager to come, people are eager to experience the Sports Hub," said Lim Teck Yin, chief executive of Singapore Sport.

Besides the SEA Games, the Singapore Sports Hub will host a range of sports and entertainment events through the year, including Asean Basketball League games and a pre-season friendly match between Serie A soccer club Juventus and a Singapore Selection team, comprising Singaporean and foreign S.League players.

But it is the opportunity to engage the public which has attracted Fraser and Neave.

"Running and cycling are very synonymous with our activities and lifestyle that our brand promotes," said Ng Jui Sia, chief executive of non-alcoholic beverages at Fraser and Neave.

"The promenade is a sheltered track.

"People can run here, they can cycle here, and it is open to the public at all hours."
