With a population of around 37,000, Liechtenstein is the fourth smallest state in Europe behind San Marino, Monaco and Vatican City.

Based in Schaan, north of capital Vaduz, the country's National Olympic Committee was established in 1935 and was known as the Olympic Committee of Liechtenstein up until 1992 when it merged with the Sport Association of Liechtenstein to become the Liechtenstein Olympic Sports Association.

In December 2013 it renamed itself the Liechtenstein Olympic Committee.

There are currently 46 National Federations and 134 clubs with more than 15,000 members affiliated to the LOC.

Liechtenstein has competed at every summer and winter Olympic Games since Berlin 1936 except for the Summer Games in Melbourne in 1956 and Moscow 1980; and the 1952 Oslo Winter Olympics.

In that time Liechtenstein has won nine medals - all at Winter Olympics - including two gold for Alpine skier Hanni Wenzel at the Lake Placid Games in 1980.

Wenzel also won a silver medal at Lake Placid, while four years earlier she claimed a bronze at the 1976 Games in Innsbruck.

Wenzel's younger brother Andreas has also tasted Olympic success, taking silver in the giant slalom at Lake Placid and following that up with a bronze at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo.

Alpine skiers Marina Nigg, Marco Pfiffner and Tina Weirather along with Nordic skier Philipp Haelg represented Liechtenstein at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

The country is getting ready to co-host next year's European Youth Olympic Festival with the Austrian state of Vorarlberg.

Participants from 49 countries are due compete across eight disciplines during the Festival, which is scheduled to run from January 25 to 30.

Liechtenstein will also host the 2019 Games of the Small States of Europe.
