David Tremblay was the first to get the Canadian bandwagon rolling as he proved as slippery as an eel for his opponent Bajrang Bajrang of India, skilfully countering any attempts at pinning him down and reversing the holds to race to a 10 point margin inside the opening two minutes to take the gold medal in the men's 61 kilogram category.

Viorel Etko got the crowd going early on as he claimed bronze for Scotland with a win over Malta's Adam Vella, while Nigerian Daniel Amas had too much for England's Sasha Madyarchyk.

The Maple Leaf was flying high again when Dori Yeats took the women's 69kg crown with another quickfire display to totally outclass Angele Tomo of Cameroon, while Scotland was to be disappointed again after Indian Navjot Kaur comfortably beat Sarah Jones with the other bronze going to Nigeria's Hannah Rueben, who overcame Refilwe Molongwana of South Africa.

Canada's third and final gold medal came after a tight and tense battle between Arjun Gill and India's Satywart Kadian in the men's 97kg final.

After two rounds of intense grappling the score was locked at 4-4 and it was down to the judges to decide the winner.

It was Gill's hand that was raised, which was not to the amusement of Kadian or his coaching team.

In the first match to go into a second round on the evening, England's Leon Rattigan eventually overpowered his Nigerian opponent Soso Tamarau 12-2 for bronze, while Northern Ireland's Hugh McCloskey proved no match for Sam Belkin of New Zealand, as the Kiwi took bronze on a score of 10-0.

Nigeria began the day by inflicting yet another defeat on an Indian wrestler and this time it was Lalita Lalita who had to settle for silver, as Odunayo Adekuoroye pinned her for a fall inside the opening 40 seconds.

"I trained hard and prayed to God," said Adekuoroye afterwards.

"[My coach said] don't rush it, stay calm and one attack will be enough.

"And it ended in a knockout."

Scotland's Shannon Hawke got a rousing reception despite going down to South Africa's Mpho Madi, while Canada's Jill Gallays overcame Christelle Lemofack Letchidjio in the bronze medal matches.

Nigeria's second success saw Aminat Adeniyi beat the mat in celebration as she powered to a comprehensive 10-0 win over Sakshi Malik of India.

The Nigerian team and small band of supporters were making the SECC their own as they cheered on another Commonwealth victory that puts them third on the weightlifting medals table.

The bronze medals went to Braxton Rei Stone of Canada and New Zealand's Tayla Ford, who both secured 4-0 wins over Edwige Ngono Eyia of Cameroon and England's Sarah Grundy respectively.

Canada's haul today puts them top of the medals table with eight in total including five gold, while India sits second on nine but just three gold.
