23:05 Usain Bolt has finally left the building. He has been replaced by an army of construction workers who will spend the next 12 hours transforming Hampden Park into a giant theatre for tomorrow night's spectacular Closing Ceremony featuring Kylie Minogue, Lulu and Deacon Blue.

Perhaps it will also include The Proclaimers and Scottie dogs. But we will have to wait and see on those, we are told.

The show is called "all back to ours", revealed David Zolkwer, head of ceremonies and artistic director for Glasgow 2014. He is promising "all the pomp without ever getting pompous. It's going to be a typical night out in Glasgow."

We can't wait.

But before then there are still 11 gold medals to be handed out tomorrow, including the men and women's road cycling races. There are five badminton finals plus the eagerly anticipated netball final between Australia and New Zealand. The remaining medals will be handed out in squash and hockey. We will be back at 09:00 with all the action.

22:18 Jamaica Olympic Association President Mike Fennell is a proud man as Usain Bolt and his team-mates receive their gold medals. 

"England's record-breaking night has continued. Disappointing, though, that silver was in the hockey after only leading until 11 seconds from the end it was the 165th medal of these Commonwealth Games. That now means England have surpassed their previous overall total of 164 at Manchester in 2002. England is also now guaranteed to finish top of the medals table, ahead of Australia, for the first time since Edinburgh 1986."

22:15 For all you squash fans out there, I must take a second to express my deepest apologies. It appears that amid all the drama and excitement of this afternoon I have forgotten to mention a gold medal in the women's doubles squash competition. So, from the bottom of my heart, here it is....

It's gold for India's Joshana Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal in the women's doubles!

The duo pulled off a shock 2-1 win over top seeds Jenny Duncalf and Laura Massaro.

Bronze goes to England's Emma Beddoes and Alison Waters after their victory against Australia's Kasey Brown and Rachael Grinham.

22:10 Yego's gold medal is the first to be won by Kenya in athletics at the Commonwealth Games in a non-running event. He is the second one from the country to claim a Commonwealth Games medal in men's javelin throw after John Mayaka, who took bronze at Christchurch 1974.

Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott was disappointed to have to settle for silver but he did win Trinidad and Tobago's sixth athletics medal at these Games, a new record.


"A dominant display from big Joe Joyce was probably a fitting way to bring the boxing action here at Glasgow 2014 to an end as his win was England's fifth overall putting them three gold medals clear of hosts Scotland, Northern Ireland and Australia here at the SSE Hydro. These Games will be remembered in boxing circles for a long time as many of the bouts on show were of the highest quality while we also witnessed two pieces of history tonight.

"The first came in the form of Nicola Adams becoming the first female Commonwealth Games boxing champion in history while Northern Ireland's Paddy Barnes became the first Home Nations fighter to retain a Commonwealth Games title.

"Earlier in the day, the magnificent Hydro arena was a cauldron of Scottish pride as the hosts were treated to two consecutive gold medals for rising star Charlie Flynn and Delhi 2010 silver medal winner Josh Taylor who went one better against Namibia's Jonas Junias. The medal ceremonies and national anthems were a sight and sound to behold.

"There was controversy along the way with the issue of headguards raising "its head" after Australian medal hope Daniel Lewis sustained a cut that forced him out of the Games. The issue has forced a rethink by governing body AIBA who have promised to re-examine its decision to do away with them in elite men's competition.

"But perhaps the biggest winner here in Glasgow was women's boxing and in Adams, compatriot Savannah Marshall and Australian Shelley Watts the Commonwealth Games has got three superb ambassadors for its first three women's champions."

"This night was supposed to be about Usain Bolt at Hampden Park, and I'm sure he was great, but in the rain here at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre we saw a simply magnificent sporting duel. Given the form of the two teams, England simply had no right to be leading. And given that there were 11 seconds to go, Australia had no right to come back. But comeback they did, and they duly win their third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in women's hockey. It was an advert to young athletes throughout the world that you should never, ever, lose faith and give up in sport. The subsequent shootout was a lottery but Australia's experience told in the end. The green and gold fans, many of whom are holding inflatable kangaroo's, are still celebrating, and they will continue to do so long into the night after that one."

Australia win the shootout 3-1 and they have won the gold medal. Captain Madonna Blyth scored the winning goal and England are left utterly despondent.

21:56 Australia score and then England miss. Australia have the lead and Jodie Kenny steps up but is brought down by England goalkeeper Maddie Hinch. A penalty stroke for Australia... And Kenny has missed it.

21:53 Silence in the arena as Casey Eastham steps up first for Australia. She has eight seconds to find the net - and she jiggles one way, then the other, and then the other, before flicking the ball into the net. But England hit back with a more simple strike. It's 1-1 so far

21:47 Boxing gold number five for England has just arrived as Joe Joyce wins his super heavyweight contest against Australian Joseph Goodall.

The big men were the last out in the boxing competition and Joyce proves too strong for Goodall leaving England as the boxing kings at Glasgow 2014.

"Three minutes to go. Australia are throwing the proverbial kitchen sink at England but they cannot break them down. It is still 1-0 to team in red and white. The crowd are already beginning a countdown, but England cannot relax. They conceded late against New Zealand before winning the shootout, and one of the oldest adages in sport is: never write off the Australians."

21:28 Revenge for Australia in the women's pole vault as Alana Boyd secures the gold.

The Aussie almost goes down at the 4.15m mark but gets over in the third attempt, before settling the nerves and clearing 4.35m, 4.40m and eventually 4.50m.

Sally Peake of Wales is her closest rival as she wins silver with a best vault of 4.25m, while Canada's Alysha Newman and Sally Scott share bronze.

Shockingly, or maybe due to the rain, only these four athletes managed to set a mark in the competition with six athletes failing to clear any height at all.


21:26 They will be celebrating over in Canada as heavyweight Samir El-Mais takes gold with a unanimous points win over David Light who was hoping to follow in the footsteps of compatriot David Nyika earlier.

But it was not to be for the man from Down Under as the Canadian was too good.

21:25 England take the lead in the hockey! Given the match so far, the first goal was always going to be scrappy, and it came in a scramble close to the goal. But a ball in from the right and Lily Owsley converts. She scored in the semi-final and she has now found the net again. Can England hold on here for a sensational victory? There are 20 minutes to go...

This would be one of the greatest moments in English hockey since Great Britain's men beat the Germans to win gold at Seoul 1988...

21:20 It's the Usain Bolt show here at Hampden! Gold to Jamaica.

England and Jamaica are neck and neck coming into the final change over but the baton goes to that man, Usain Bolt, and he powers clear to take the win in a Games record of 37.58.

Trinidad and Tobago come in third just 0.08 seconds behind England in 38.10.
 
21:15 Talking of sing songs. Usain Bolt has just done a nifty little jig to The Proclaimers here at Hampden Park. The crowd were lapping it up!

Also, Bolt being on track can only mean one thing. It's the final of the men's 4x100m relay.

As the camera pans to the Jamaican he pulls his typical Bolt pose.

It's a welcome change from the 'hamster-wheel' entertainment, we saw yesterday, but can you go anywhere in Glasgow without hearing that song? I even heard insidethegames historian Philip Barker tunefully muttering 'It's gonna take me 500 hours...to get to Hampden Park' the other day. Meanwhile, we are back underway in the final for what promises to be a huge half of hockey. Australia are clearly the better team, but England are tough and producing their best play when it counts in the business end of the competition. England have already almost certainly secured first place on the medals table ahead of Australia at Glasgow 2014 but if they sneak a win here tonight, they will have stuck the knife in and twisted..."

21:05 South African gold in the triple jump!

That jump of 17.20m was enough for Khotso Mokoena to secure the win as he finishes ahead of Nigeria's Tosin Oke. 

Between the pair of them they only actually managed three successful jumps but it was enough for the gold and silver.

India's Arpinder Arpinder Singh manages four successful jumps but still only finishes with bronze. His distance of 16.63m came on his first jump...

20:03 Gold for Daley in the diving.

Daley nails 93.5 in his final dive to set a huge total of 516.55. Silver goes to Ooi Tze Liang of Malaysia and bronze to Vincent Riendeau fo Canada, with Australia's Beijing 2008 Olympic champion Matthew Mitcham fourth.

Utter dominance from Daley, who put to bed the disappointment of only placing second in the synchronised event.

"The estate of the late great Bob Marley must be celebrating these Commonwealth Games as much as Glasgow 2014. One of his tracks is usually played to celebrate a Jamaican gold medal. The one's just presented to the women's 4x400m team was their eighth gold medal of these Games. Minutes later that was followed by their ninth in the women's 4x100m. If the Usain Bolt-inspired men do the same then Jamaica will match the 10 medals they won at Melbourne in 2006, their best-ever performance."

21:00 The half time whistle now goes and it is, 0-0. A match befitting the conditions so far with barely a valid chance for either side.

20:58 With two minutes left in the first half, Australia finally get a penalty corner, but Jodie Kenny's shot whistles harmlessly past the post of England's Maddie Hinch. This match is proving a real test for Australia. They've swept into the final but will have to dig deep here - and you cannot underestimate the power of the crowd as "England, England" is chanted around the arena.

20:57 And it's a Games record for Jamaica!

A comfortable win for the Jamaican team as the power to victory in 41.83, more than a second faster than Nigeria in second.

England take third in 43.18.

20:56 But back at Hampden the women's 4x100m relay final is underway. Jamaica and Nigeria will be favourites here.

20:54 Tom Daley is closing in on gold in the 10m platform diving. A stunning 102.60 in his penultimate effort has put him over 60 points ahead Ooi Tze Liang of Malaysia. Only a failed final dive would realistically cost him gold now, but team mate Jack Laugher did exactly that in the 3m springboard final...

"The victory of Julius Kiplagat Yego proves that Kenyans cannot only run but they can throw too. To beat the Olympic champion is still an extraordinary achievement for the 25-year-old who was born in Cheptonon in the Nandi District, an area better known better for its distance runners.‏

Yego became interested in the javelin throw as a youth and he watched videos of athletes such as Jan Zelezny and Andreas Thorkildsen on YouTube to help with his technique. His breakthrough came at the African Championships in Nairobi four years ago when he won a bronze medal. He won a gold medal at the All-African Games in Maputo in 2011 and then won again at the African Championships in Porto Novo.

In 2011 the International Association of Athletics Federations gave Yego a six-month scholarship to train alongside elite javelin coaches in Europe, with the aim of preparing him for the 2012 London Olympics. After two months of training at the IAAF-accredited centre in Kuortane, Finland, Yego returned to Kenya in April 2012 and threw a new record of 79.95m.
This was within the Olympic B standard for the event and gained him the prospect of becoming the first Kenyan person to compete in the javelin at the Olympics. During London 2012 he increased his national record to 81.81m and reached the final, where he finished 12th in a competition won by Keshorn Walcott, the Trinidad and Tobago athlete he beat tonight.

20:41 Julies Kiplangat Yebo takes a lap of honour as he wins a shock gold medal in the men's javelin

The Kenyan finishes ahead of Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago who will be disappointed with his best throw of 82.67m.

Walcott actually threw further in qualifying, 85.28m, than he did to win gold at London 2012, 84.58m.

Australia's Hamish Peacock finishes the event in third.

20:38 David Nyika takes a less than popular win in the men's light heavyweight final at the SSE Hydro as he overcomes the flamboyant Mauritian Kennedy St Pierre who was a crowd favourite.

There was little to separate the two boxers in truth but the New Zealander was ahead on all judges scorecards only just and becomes Commonwealth Games champion.

20:31 Abdulazeez Ibrahim of Nigeria won gold in the men's powerlifting heavyweight division to continue the utter domination for the west African country in the sport.

Rajinder Rahelu took the silver with 180.5 and Yee Khei Jong of Malaysia the bronze with 178 points.

20:26 A final gold medal to report in table tennis as Zhan Jian surprises top seeded compatriot Gao Ning 4-1 in the men's singles final to claim gold for Singapore. Zhan is ranked 30th in the world in comparison with Gao's 12th, but was simply too fast and consistent around the table.

That is a fourth gold medal for the Asian powerhouse in the sport. Only the mixed doubles, won by Paul and Joanna Drinkhall of England, escaped their grasp.

Liam Pitchford won English silver with Tin Tin Ho in the mixed doubles, and has now added singles bronze after beating third seed Sharath Kamal Achanta of India, 4-2.

20:22 On the field here at Hampden and it appears Kenya have taken their superb talents from the track over to the javelin as Julius Kiplagat Yego leads with a mark of 83.87m.

Trinidad and Tobago's Keshern Walcott is second with 82.13m, while Australia's Hamish Peacock sits in the bronze medal position.

It's tough for the athletes out there with the javelins proving slippery in all the rain. 

"That fantastic victory in the 4x400m was England's 53rd gold medal of these Glasgow 2014, making them officially the most successful Commonwealth Games ever. They have matched the tally of gold medals they won at Manchester in 2002 but have already claimed more silver medals than they did at those Games. There are reasons for double celebration for the English are almost certain to finish top of the medals for the first time since Edinburgh 1986."

20:15 England win it! What a finish, though!

Matthew Hudson-Smith bursts ahead down the back straight, before being reeled in by the Bahamas' Chris Brown in the final 100m. Brown looks to have won it but a sudden late burst by Hudson-Smith sees him pip gold on the line 

There's just 0.15 seconds in it!

Trinidad and Tobago have to settle for third as they finish in 3:01.51, exactly one second behind the Bahamas.

20:14 The final change now and its Trinidad and Tobago, followed by England and Bahamas! 

20:13 Back to the track and England edge ahead on the first baton change, Trinidad and Tobago closing quickly, however.

20:12 But before before that, Antony Fowler proves he is the Commonwealth middleweight king as he bags a third consecutive boxing gold for England and again it was an Indian fighter who succumbed, this time Vijender Vijender.

Like his compatriot Fitzgerald, Fowler made an explosive start by putting Vijender to the canvas with a rocket of a left hand and it looked like the Indian was in trouble.

But to his credit he cleared his head and boxed on valiantly but could make no impression on the impressive Fowler.

20:11 Before that though, it's time for the men's 4x400m relay!

20:07 The Jamaican 4x100m relay team for final at 21:15 ash been confirmed as Livermore, Bailey-Cole, Ashmeade and Bolt.  They will be in lane five.

Jamaica will face Antigua in lane one, Bahamas in lane two, Trinidad and Tobago in lane three, England in lane four, Canada in lane six, Nigeria in lane seven and South Africa in lane eight

"I can report the rain has stopped at the National Hockey Centre, but for how long I cannot say. "Not long," a jounalistic colleague predicts, nodding his head in the direction of umbrellas going up outside.

In Melbourne and Delhi, Australia won gold and England bronze. The Aussies also finished second at the recent World Cup to England's 11th. If this game had taken place a couple of years ago, when an England-dominated Great Britain team won bronze at London 2012 in comparision with Australia's fifth place, the expectations would have been different. But now the 'Hockeyroos' are the massive favourites. They've already beaten England 3-0 in the preliminary stage here in Glasgow and have scored 32 goals and conceeded one in their five matches so far."

19:59 That 5-2 win for New Zealand over South Africa has been confirmed. New Zealand make amends for their agonising penalty shootout loss in the semi-finals by winning the bronze medal.

Next up is England versus Australia in the final. Can the English avenge their loss to the Aussies in the men's competition earlier today?

19:56 We're coming into the second attempts in the men's triple jump with South Africa's Khotso Mokoena currently in the lead with a jump of 17.20m.

Nigeria's Tosin Oke is second on 16.84, while India's Arpinder Arpinder Singh in third.

The two were neck and neck for 300m before the Jamaican burst ahead down the home straight. Comfortable win in the end as the team finish in 3:23.82, a new Games record.

Nigeria will be happy with silver as they finish a second behind on 3:24.71.

England come in third.

19:52 It's close between Jamaica and Nigeria as we come into the last 400m. Stephanie McPhearson takes the baton for Jamaica, Folashade Abugan for Nigeria.

19:50 And the women's 4x400m is underway. Jamaica will be favourites, of course, but expect quick times from England, Nigeria and Australia.

"Official line-ups for tonight's 4x100m relays here at Hampden Park at 9.15pm have yet to be officially declared but word out of the Jamaican camp is that 100m gold medallist Kemar Bailey-Cole and finalist Jason Livermore will join Usain Bolt and Nickel Ashmeade

"Bailey-Cole and Livermore are replacing Julian Forte and Kimmari Roach from yesterday's heats line-up. Roach actually injured his quad running Jamaica's lead-off leg last night and carried on despite the injury. Imagine the conspiracy theories that would have swirled round if he had pulled up without getting the baton round to Bolt, whose appearance has been the subject of speculation since he arrived in the Scottish city last week.

"Bolt, however, cannot be looking forward to running in these conditions. Coming back from injury for any athlete is always a difficult thing and Bolt must be aware if he gets hurt again in these conditions it could have far-reaching repercussions for his career."

19:44 There's a lot happening on the field here at Hampden Park now with the men's triple jump and javelin underway, as well as the slightly delayed women's pole vault.

Next up on track, however, it's the women's 4x400m relay.

19:41 Fitzgerald powers to another gold for England in men's welterweight.

Scott Fitzgerald has just punched his way to a second gold for England this evening with an awesome display of power that saw his opponent Mandeep Jangra of India given two standing counts.

An action packed first round saw Fitzgerald unload with a superb left hook that caught the Indian flush in the face and sent him to the deck.

To be fair to Jangra he recovered to land a few good shots of his own. But a right-handed pile-driver from Fitzgerald in the second saw Jangra head for the canvas again but once more he showed his bravery by coming back for more.

The Indian managed to avoid another pounding in the last round and there was no need to go to the judge's scorecards for this one.

19:40 There was barely anything between the field come the final bend of that men's 1500m.

Kwenoi broke on the bend but was reeled in by the three behind. Willis was unlucky not to catch him on the line, while Matthews may have left it a second too late as he was closing in on the front runners in the final few paces.

19:39 And gold goes to James Kiplagat Magut of Kenya.

Just 0.34 splits the top four as Magut comes home in 3:39.31, followed by team mate Ronald Kwemoi and New Zealand's Nick Willis.

South Africa's Julian Matthews finishes an agonising fourth.

19:37 There's the bell everyone still together in this one

19:35 Now underway at Hampden Park we have the men's 1500m final.  

A strong group of athletes make up this field with three Kenyans, two New Zealdanders and one from England, Scotland, Tanzania, South Africa, Australia and Wales. 

19:30 Back in Edinburgh and Australia's Esther Qin has taken gold in the women's individual 3m springboard.

The Aussie finished with a score of 347.25 with Canada's Jennifer Abel and England's Hannah Starling coming in second and third respectively.

19:27 New Zealand have all but sealed the bronze medal in the women's hockey after moving 5-3 ahead of South Africa. Anita Punt scores and then Jordan Grant grabs a second.

19:25 That was a sublime 5,000m race. Pavey looked dead and buried with 200m to go but dug dead to secure the bronze.

19:23 Cherono takes the win! What a brilliant finish to the race.

Pavey broke with 400m to go, with the Kenyans responding on the final bend. It looked like it was all over for the 40-year-old Englishwoman as Cherono flew ahead, followed by Kisa and Muruiki.

But Pavey surged again with 80m to go. She passed one, only to be pipped at the line by Kisa. There was just 0.06 seconds in it!

That spells a Kenyan one, two and England three.

Cherono's time was 15.07.21.

19:21 There's the bell. Pavey takes to the front! 

19:20 England off and running at the SSE Hydro with gold for Marshall.

Savannah Marshall has followed compatriot Nicola Adams by claiming the final Commonwealth Games women's boxing gold medal on offer her in Glasgow as she wins by unanimous decision against Ariane Fortin of Canada.

Marshall never really looked in rouble against Fortin who was giving away a couple of inches to the Englishwoman.

19:19 Just 1500m metres to go here at Hampden and there's a five-athlete lead group.

As expected, the Kenyan trio are among it, along with Jo Pavey and Eloise Wellings.

19:15 A brilliant strike from Jordan Grant and New Zealand are back in front. A quick check to clarify that the shot had come off a Kiwi player, but the goal is confirmed. It's 3-2 with 14 minutes to go.

"Kathleen Taylor has managed an equaliser for South Africa and we are locked at 2-2 midway through the second half. The incessant rain has ceased, but only very slightly, and it's certainly slowing down the attacking play off both teams. It reminds me of playing hockey on grass at school where the challenges was more about getting the ball moving than the proper rigours of the game. I feel the conditions may help less-fancied England in the final though, as it may prevent Australia exhibiting all of their silky skills."

19:07 As you would expect there is a strong Kenyan contingent in this women's 5,000m with Mercy Cherono, Janet Kisa and Margaret Muriuki allow likely to be battling for the gold.

England's Jo Pavey should prove a worthy contender, not to mention Australia's Elroise Wellings and Scotland's Stephanie Twell.

A likely loser in this race is the Solomon Island's Sharon Firisua who's personal best is 18:59.07 for this distance. As ecpected she is already quite a way behind the field.

"After a rousing end to this afternoon's session in the SSE Hydro which saw two raucous renditions of Flower of Scotland to celebrate gold medal wins for Charlie Flynn and Josh Taylor, we are back for the final boxing session of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Scotland along with Australia and Northern Ireland won two titles each earlier along with gold for England's Nicola Adams. England has four more shots at more gold in the form of Savannah Marshall, Scott Fitzgerald, Antony Fowler and Joe Joyce. Scotland and Northern Ireland have no medal hopes left while Australia can add to its tally through Joseph Goodall. New Zealand also has two shots at glory in the form of David Nyika and David Knight."

19:00 The weather is beginning to become a problem here at Hampden Park with the women's pole vault final, which was meant to start at 19:00, now delayed until 19:45. 

Better news for the track athletes, though, with the women's 5,000m about to get underway, on time as well.

18:56 It's looking good for Nigeria again in the powerlifting as Abdulazeez Ibrahim leads the way in the final of the men's heavyweight division.

His lift of 217kg scored him 190.9 points after the multiplier was factored in, however, he still leads India's Rajinder Rahelu who has lifted 185kg for 180.5 points.

18:45 Proceedings are drawing to a close in he women's 3m springboard final over at Edinburgh's Royal Commonwealth Pool.

Australia's Esther Qin leads the way with just one dive to go.

Canada's Jennifer Abel is just behind as she looks to add yet more silverware to the gold she won on the 1m springboard yesterday.

This may be one of the biggest matches of the year for these teams, but it has the feel of a wintry Sunday afternoon club match at the moment. The astroturf pitch is getting more sodden by the minute, slowing the play down, as the relentless rain is only getting heavier. But the hockey itself is hotting up as South Africa draw level, with a penalty shot from captain Marsha Cox. But then the Kiwis move ahead again, with a strike from Krystal Forgesson."

17:55 Singapore have taken gold in the women's doubles table tennis final.

Favourites, Tianwei Feng and Mengyu Yu beat the Australian pairing of Jian Fang Lay and Miao Miao 3-1 at the Scotstoun Sports Campus ttake the title.

Bronze was picked up by Canada's Anqi Luo and Mo Zhang after they beat England's Kelly Sibley and Joanna Drinkhall 3-2 in the bronze medal play off.

17:45 With all the drama that's been going on this afternoon it may have been hard to decipher what was actually going in the world of Commonwealth sport. So, with this in mind, here'a a little update for you.

In the badminton men's singles Singapore's Derek Wong and India's Kasyap Parupalli will battle for gold after beating India's Gurusaidutt and England's Rajiv Ouseph in their semi-final encounters.

Malaysia will take on Singapore in the men's doubles after wins over two English pairings.

The women's gold medal finals will be fought between Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour and Canada's Michelle Li after they beat P V Singhu of India and Jing Yi Tee in their semis, while India and Malaysia will go head to head in the women's doubles.

And finally for badminton, it's an all-English affair in the mixed doubles gold medal final after wins over Scotland and Malaysia.

In hockey Australia's men will play India for gold after wins over England and New Zealand earlier today, while the women's final will see England play Australia later this evening.

There's an England, Australia final in the squash doubles after wins over Scotland and another English team in matches played today with the same two nations battling for gold in the mixed doubles.

There's just one gold medal to bring you in the table tennis as an all Singapore affair sees Ning Gao take on Jian Zhan in the men's singles.

17:18 This is not the first occasion Paddy Barnes has got in trouble at a ceremony. At London 2012 he held aloft a sign reading: "Open For Sponsors", followed by his Twitter handle. It instantly gained him 3,000 new Twitter followers.

Four years earlier, receiving the Olympic bronze medal he had won at Beijing 2008, he seen saying on the podium: "I don't really want this."

17:07 Northern Ireland's Paddy Barnes is at the centre of controversy again following the ceremony to receive the gold medal he won in the light flyweight earlier.

As the strains of Northern Ireland's national anthem "Oh Danny Boy" begin to drift across The Hydro Arena he turns to the medallist standing next to him and says: "This is not my anthem."

The song is closely associated with Ireland but many believe it has not even about the country.

The pipes-a-calling, the summers in the meadow, the whole green-tinted kit and caboodle was dreamed up in the Somerset drawing room of English lawyer and lyricist Frederic Weatherly who, as far as anyone can tell, never set foot on Irish soil.

The song, though, has with so many things in Ireland become the course of dispute between Nationalists and Republicans in Ireland. Barnes' is upset that he has now become caught up in a row which is already generating plenty of comments on Twitter.



17:00 Josh Taylor has followed in Charlie Flynn's footsteps and raised the roof again by taking the men's light welterweight gold.

In what was another quality contest, the Delhi 2010 silver medallist has gone one better with a unanimous points win over Namibia's Junias Jonas.

Both men went toe-to-toe in the final exchanges but it was Tyalor whose arm was raised.

Kangaroos on bicycles?

"Charlie Flynn will be presented with his gold medal by Dick McTaggart, winner of the Olympic lightweight gold medal at Melbourne 1956 and Rome 1960 and considered perhaps Britain's greatest-ever amateur boxer. At Melbourne he was awarded the Val Barker Trophy for being the Games outstanding boxer. Now 78 and living in Troon, the reception McTaggart receives is sure to make this the most emotional medal ceremony of these Games involving a Scottish athlete."

16:33 Fantastic noise and scenes at the Hydro as Charlie Flynn secured gold in the men's lightweight division.

The fiery young Scot was a bundle of energy and punching power as he took on Joe Fitzpatrick in a superb contest.In an atmosphere that would be out of place at the three famous old football ground in this city, the crowd roared Flynn onto victory while Fitzpatrick also had sizeable and audible support emanating from the steep stands here. It was Flynn who channelled his emotions into his fists as he took a unanimous points win and instigate a few tears when his hand was raised in triumph.

16:26 In the latest bronze medal match in the table tennis, England's Joanna Drinkhall and Kelly Sibley, gold and bronze medal winners in the mixed doubles earlier, are 2-1 up against Canada's Anqi Luo and Mo Zhang in the women's doubles.

There are a few empty seats but not many and the crowd are relishing their opportunity to watch such exciting action in such a great location. 16:10 Gold medal number two for the fighting Irish!
 
Olympic bronze medallist Michael Conlan has secured Northern Ireland's second boxing gold medal of the afternoon with a unanimous points decision win over Qais Ashfaq of England.

Conlan came into the fight protecting a nasty cut above his right eye that has been a factor in his previous fights so far and would have been wary of it opening early again.

Ashfaq looked in good knick in the opening round while Conlan appeared a bit cagey but he soon settled into his rhythm exchanging some some quickfire volleys with the Englishman.

Sensing he needed a big final round Ashfaq upped the tempo but was caught with a pearler of a left hook from Conlan to disrupt any potential fightback.

15:53 It's all over in the powerlifting and it's a Nigerian one, two.

Paul Kehinde takes the gold with his lift of 207kg for 221 points, while team mate Rolland Ezuruike takes silver with a final lift of 189kg for 220.2 points.

In third is England's Ali Jawad who broke two world records en route to a 194kg lift for 209.4 points.

15:38 Boxing gold number two for Australia as Andrew Moloney takes the men's flyweight title with a unanimous decision.

Pakistan's Muhammad Waseem is not pleased with the decision however shaking his head and fingers to the judges and the crowd when the announcement is made.

Waseem was definitely well in the fight in yet another close affair here but Moloney landed marginally more cleaner shots to take the win.

England's Ali Jawad lifts 191kg to beat his own world record of 190kg set in Dubai earlier this year. With a points score of 206.2, he's still in third though.

15:25 It's time to return to the Armadillo after all that drama where Nigeria's Paul Kehinde still leads.  

The Nigerian has finished his three lifts and now just awaits the scores from group A. 

Here, fellow Nigerian Rolland Ezuruike leads the way with his lift of 184kg for 214.4 points. England's Ali Jawad has lifted heavier at 191kg but due to his heavier bodyweight of around 8kg, he sits in third with 200.8 points.

15:17 In April 2013, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined that methylhexanamine was potentially dangerous and did not qualify as a legal dietary supplement; it warned supplement makers that it was illegal to market methylhexanamine and warned consumers of potentially serious health risks associated with taking it.

The FDA has issued warning letters to manufacturers and distributors who continued to market products containing methylhexanamine.

15:14 Methylhexaneamine was originally developed in 1944 as a nasal decongestant pharmaceutical drug but withdrawn from sale in 1983. But it was reintroduced 20 years later and is now widely under many names as an energy-boosting dietary supplement.

Many experts have questioned how safe it is to take and in 2010 the American military issued a recall of all methylhexanamine-containing products from all military exchange stores worldwide.

15:03 Gold for Northern Ireland

Paddy Barnes retains his men's light flyweight gold with a unanimous points win over India's Devendro Laishram.

Both fighters were all action in the opening round as is normally the case with lighter weight divisions with each man firing off a volley of punches - with some landing and some missing.

Laishram floored his semi-final opponent yesterday and two-time Olympic bronze medal winner Barnes will have been acutely aware of the Indian's power but he bobs and weaves before landing some telling blows to become a double Commonwealth Games gold medallist.

Montsho fails doping test

14:50 Botswana's former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Amantle Montsho has failed a doping test following the women's 400m final on Tuesday.

Montsho's A sample was found to contain the prohibited stimulant methylhexaneamine.

She was notified of her A sample result and has asked for her B sample to be tested, which will take place at the accredited laboratory in London on Monday August 4.

Montsho attended the Provisional Hearing of the Federation Court, presided by CGF vice-president Bruce Robertson, which ruled that the provisional suspension of the athlete will continue.

She finished fourth in the 400m final on Tuesday in 51.10, a race won by Jamaica's Stephanie McPherson. She missed a medal by a hundreth of a second as Jamaica completed a cleansweep

The athlete is a former Commonwealth Games gold medallist having picked up the title in Delhi four years ago. The win ensured she was the first ever athlete from Botswana to win gold at the Commonwealth Games.

She followed this up with a gold in the World Championships the following year before finishing fourth at London 2012 with a time of 49.75. 

At the IAAF World Championships in Moscow last year, in a terrific race she was run down in the final metres by Britain's Christine Ohuruogu, losing by just four thousandths of a second when Ohuruogu dipped and Montsho remained upright.

Methylhexaneamine is a substance often found in dietary supplements.

A number of athletes have been banned in recent years after testing positive for it, including Latvian ice hockey player Vitalijs Pavlovs at Sochi 2014.

Montsho's failure to win a medal at Glasgow 2014 had been considered a disappointment after running 51.88 in the heats, which made her the fastest qualifier for the final
