The initiative is currently focusing on people between the ages of 15 and 30 years old with cerebral palsy and other neurological-type impairments, such as multiple sclerosis or an acquired brain injury, and is targeting the sports of athletics, cycling, swimming, canoeing, rowing, shooting, triathlon, table tennis, boccia, Alpine skiing and snowboarding.

Athletes expressing an interest in the Para-sports Draft will be invited to attend state-based selection trials, with successful athletes being offered the opportunity to link with a coach in their area and embark on a 12-month training programme supported by the AIS and the APC, as well as the relevant national sporting organisation.

Six-time shot put Paralympian Hamish MacDonald urged people to put themselves forward for the programme.

"Sport has given me so many opportunities in life," the Atlanta 1996 gold medallist said.

"I encourage everyone to get involved.

"Don't worry if you've never played sport before.

"If you're aged between 15 and 30 and you're up for a challenge or you're keen to try something new we'd love to hear from you.

"Jump online and start your journey today."

The AIS and APC believe the programme could help Australia hit its Winning Edge performance targets heading in to the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

"It's pleasing to see national sporting organisations, the Australian Paralympic Committee, the AIS and numerous other stakeholders working closely to find athletes who may be able to transfer their skills, knowledge and winning ways into Olympic and Paralympic sports," AIS director Matt Favier said.

"Individuals aged 15-30 with cerebral palsy and neurological brain impairments with a keen interest to be involved in the Para-sports Draft, express your interest today."
