The Argentine won a tight first set 7-1 on a tiebreak, before completely dominating in the second to win it 6-1.

Houdet, the second seed, had survived a scare yesterday against Belgian Joachim Gerard, having to come from a set down - and a tiebreak in the second - to advance to the last four.

But it was not to be for the Frenchman today, who was on the hunt for a fourth Grand Slam title.

Fernandez will face top seed Shingo Kunieda for the title on the courts of Flushing Meadows, in a rematch of the Australian Open final which the Japanese player won.

The four-time US Open champion beat Frenchman Nicolas Peifer in two tight sets, 7-5, 7-6(5) to make the final.

In the women's singles, top seed Yui Kamiji had a mighty fight on her hands to reach the final.

She was pushed to a final set decider against Dutchwoman Jiske Griffioen, coming from a set down to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Kamiji, who won her first singles Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in June, will play second seed Aniek Van Koot, who beat countrywoman Marjolein Buis 6-1, 6-3.

In the quad singles, Briton Andy Lapthorne is through to the sem-finals after beating South Africa's Lucas Sithole 6-2, 6-3, while in a battle of the Americans, David Wagner thrashed Nick Taylor 6-0, 6-0.
