The first-ever Games in South America will officially get underway with the Opening Ceremony at the Maracanã Stadium on August 5, although the football tournament will start two days earlier.

The competition is then due to begin on August 6 with events in archery, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, cycling road race, equestrian eventing, fencing, artistic gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, rowing, rugby, shooting, swimming, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, water polo and weightlifting taking place.

All 28 sports will hold their competitions over the following days before the Olympics end with the Closing Ceremony on August 21.

Of particular interest for Brazilian natives is the scheduling of the finals for volleyball, football and basketball, which have proved to be a major draw since tickets went on sale on March 31.

The volleyball finals are due to take place at the Maracanãzinho on August 20 and 21, the same days on which the basketball finals will be held at the Carioca Arena one, while the Maracanã is set to host the football finals on August 19 and 20.

Meanwhile, the finals of golf and rugby sevens, the two sports added to the Olympic programme for Rio 2016, are in line to be staged on August 14 and 20, and August 8 and 11, respectively.

In February, campaigners angry at the construction of the golf course being built for next year's Olympics, which they claim will damage the environment, confronted International Olympic Committee (IOC) President, Thomas Bach.

Bach was greeted with banners reading "ecological holocaust", "Thomas Bach is a nature killer" and "The city is not for sale" as he left a hotel opposite the Copacabana beach after the conclusion of a three-day IOC Executive Board meeting.
