Mexico Guerreros booked their place in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) quarter-finals as they claimed a commanding 4-1 win over the British Lionhearts in Aguascalientes.

Mexico succumbed to defeat in the opening super heavyweight bout as Britain’s Joe Joyce, one of the Series’ top performers, beat Edgar Ramirez with a narrow points decision.

Orlando Huitzil Ahuatl levelled the scores with a victory over Spaniard José Kelvin de la Nieve Linares in the flyweight division.

From there the Guerreros never looked back as they stormed to a dominant success.

Marvin Cabrera edged his side ahead with a classy performance in his welterweight bout with Haizel Ekow Tabiri-Essuman.

That Rogelio Romero the chance to seal his team’s place in the next round in the light heavyweight contest.

It was one he took, as a punishing left hook saw him knock John Newell out just 100 seconds into the match-up, and the gloss was added to the victory when lightweight Lindolfo Delgado secured a dominant points win against Oualid Belaoura.

Cuba Domadores meanwhile continued their dominance of the WSB with their 14th consecutive victory of the event, again by a whitewash scoreline as they thrashed Ukraine Otamans 5-0 in Havana.

The Cuban side show no sign of relinquishing their title as they cruised to another trouble-free win, and the result saw Ukraine fall to fourth in the Group A table.

There was a much tighter affair in the group though as the Russian Boxing Team ended the regular season with a superb away victory, beating Morocco 3-2 in Casablanca.

Adlan Abdurashidov got his team off to the best possible start by overcoming Hamza Rabii in their lightweight bout, before Russia doubled their advantage when super heavyweight Maxim Babanin secured a points win over Abouhamada Abdeljalil.

There was a brief fightback from the home side when Achraf Kharroubi proved too strong for debutant Karen Arutiunian in the flyweight division.

But the Russian Boxing Team hit back once again as Pavel Silyagin won a close light heavyweight affair on a split decision to give his team the overall win.

Morocco’s Mohammed Rabii did manage to end the night on a high but his welterweight victory over Tamerlan Magomedov was nothing more than a scant consolation.
