Five British Olympic champions are due to run in the Olympians Mile at the BUPA Westminster Mile event this weekend, it has been announced.

The race, due to take place on Sunday (May 24), is set to feature Moscow 1980 figure skating gold medallist Robin Cousins, Sydney 2000 heptathlon champion Denise Lewis and three members of the British hockey team that won Olympic gold medals at Seoul 1988, Stephen Batchelor, Robert Clift and Richard Leman,

The five champions feature as part of a field of over 90 Olympians who will compete in their own separate race at the event, which will mark 30 years since Briton Steve Cram broke the mile record of 3min 46.32sec, set in Oslo in 1985.

“The mile holds a very special place in my heart and it’s wonderful to take part in this race alongside so many of my fellow Olympians on such a special day,” said Cram, the Los Angeles 1984 1500m silver medallist.

“I grew up immersed in the history of the mile with heroes like Sir Roger Bannister and those who broke the world record after him.

“The mile is the perfect distance for any age and any ability and Britain has an incredible tradition in this event.

“I’m looking forward to seeing thousands of runners, young and old, running the mile on Sunday (May 24)."

As well as the Olympians Mile, which will feature the likes of Cram and other Olympic medallists, races for families, adults, female-only, veterans, juniors, elite athletes and senior and junior wheelchair athletes will also take place.

The men’s wheelchair race will once again pit British star David Weir against arch-rival Marcel Hug of Switzerland as both athletes bid to become the first to record a sub-three minute mile.

The official starting duties fall to 98-year-old Bill Lucas, Britain’s oldest living Olympian, who competed in the 5,000 metres event during the 1948 Games in London.

Outside of the races themselves, a vast array of entertainment will be on offer, including live music, yoga master classes and activities for children.

“It’s fantastic that so many of Britain’s great Olympians are coming together to run this mile,” said Joslyn Hoyte-Smith, chairman of the Olympians and event organiser.

“This is our first event involving Olympians from so many different sports who have participated in Games going back to 1948.”

The BUPA Westminster Mile was an event set up with the legacy of London 2012 in mind, and its first edition in 2013 attracted over 3,000 entrants.
