England's European Boxing Confederation (EUBC) junior champion Ebonie Jones continued her unbeaten run with victory over Russia’s Geliusa Galiyeva at the International Boxing Association Women’s Junior and Youth World Championships at the Xinzhuang Stadium in Taipei.

Jones reached the quarter-finals by producing a superb performance in the stand-out contest on day three, expertly using her powerful attacks and great speed to earn a triumph over Galiyeva, widely tipped to be a gold medal prospect at the competition.

Switzerland’s Eliana Pileggi claimed one of the major shocks of the day’s action as she beat China’s junior champion Zhang Shuo in the pinweight 46 kilogram division.

The surprises did not stop there, though, as Tajikistan won their first-ever bout at this level thanks to Sumaiya Kosimova’s split decision victory against Roza Asanowicz of Poland.

Mongolian Enkhjargal Munguntsetseg then became the first boxer in Taipei to beat a Russian fighter with a closely-fought success over Ekaterina Molchanova.

Ireland’s Niamh Earley perhaps laid claim to the biggest upset of the competition so far as she narrowly beat Anna Krasnoperova of Russia, the hot favourite in the junior light bantamweight class.

Elsewhere, there was a rare successful day for the host nation, who had lost all of their bouts at the tournament so far until experienced Lo Chin Ting secured their first victory by ousting 2013 AIBA Women’s Junior World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Roberta Bonatti of Italy.

“I am very happy that I was able to win my opening contest against the tough Italian boxer in my home city,” she said.

“In the beginning, I used my regular punching style, but I felt suddenly exhausted due the intensity of this hard bout.

“I had to change my tactics in the final round where I moved less, and this switch was enough for me to win the contest.”

Her triumph was followed by 18-year-old flyweight Huang Hsiao Wen, who proved too strong for Erdenebat Nyamsuren of Mongolia, dominating large parts of the contest on her way to a valiant win.

It was also a fruitful day for the United States team as they clinched victory in four bouts, a run started by 14-year-old Heaven Garcia, who beat Ireland’s Shauna Blakey by virtue of a unanimous decision.

Pauline Viesca then doubled the American tally thanks to a victory over Kazakhstan’s Akniyet Abdigozha in the light bantamweight category, before 2013 junior world champion Caitlin Orosco executed her game plan to perfection on her way to narrow win against India’s Haobijan Mahe Devi.

The final American triumph came thanks to lightweight Jajaira Gonzalez, who edged out Dana Borzei of Romania.
