Russia completed a clean sweep of synchronised swimming gold medals at Baku 2015 after proving to be a class above their opposition in the solo and free combination rivals here today.

Having secured every Olympic gold in the sport since the Sydney 2000 Olympics, Russia were understandably the team to beat and their young side showed future success on the Olympic stage is a likely prospect.

The morning session saw Anisiya Neborako trying to add to Russia’s triumphs in yesterday’s duets and free routine events.

The 18-year-old began the competition as the huge favourite for gold having scored eight points higher than her nearest rival in qualification.

Neborako maintained her advantage by scoring a total of 170.9924 points to easily secure her second gold medal of the Games, with Spain’s Berta Ferreras Sanz finishing a distant runner-up having received 162.9758 from the judges.

The Spaniard narrowly finished ahead of the 162.4333 scored by Austria’s Anna-Maria Alexandri, who, in spite of the trauma of three of her teammates being injured in the bus crash in the Athletes’ Village last Thursday (June 12) has earned silver and bronze in Baku.

World junior champion Neborako would have the opportunity to rack up her third gold medal in just 48 hours as she was also part of Russia’s free combination team.

Italy had held top spot in the competition with a score of 84.8667 only the Russian team blew their lead out of the water by recording a score of 90.2333, which meant in each of the finals they had scored over 90 points mark.

Ukraine responded with an excellent performance of their own to score 86.8667 and move into the silver medal position.

But they were forced to settle for bronze as the last nation to compete, Spain, leapfrogged them in the standings with 87.7333.

"It was an unforgettable experience,” reflected Valeriya Filenkova on Russia claiming all four golds.

“We are so proud to bring a medal home for our country."

Filenkova was one of three Russian swimmers to leave Baku 2015 have won three gold medals, along with Neborako and Daria Kulagina.
