Following on from yesterday’s successes for Gela Bolkvadze and Nikoloz Kakmelashvili in the 74 kilogram and 96kg categories respectively, Zviadi Pataridze and Ramaz Zoidze captured the 120kg and 66kg titles in the  Pan-American Judo Center.

The pair's efforts helped earn Georgia the team title with 63 points, followed by Azerbaijan in second place with 53 and Russia in third with 47.

Patardize beat Sergey Semanov 3-1 in the 120kg final, preventing the Russian from capturing his second junior world title in as many years.

Zoidze was first on the board in the 66kg final against Russia’s Akhmed Kaytsukov, earning four points for a headlock before a two-point over-under toss put him into a 6-0 lead.

The Georgian’s lead started to evaporate late in the first when he missed on a headlock, giving Kaytsukov his back and the gut wrench for two points.

In the second period it was all Zoidze, however, as a snap down and gut wrench of his own ended the match by technical fall, 10-2.

The 120kg bronze medals went to Turkey’s Yildrim Osman and Armenia’s Edgar Khachoryan at the expense of the United States’ Samuel Stoll and India’s Mehar Singh respectively.

Azerbaijan’s Ruhim Miraiylov won one of the two 66kg bronze medal matches against Turkey’s Arslan Cengriz and was joined on the third step of the podium by Iran’s Ali Arslan, who beat Ukraine’s Artem Matiash.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan’s Murad Mommadov beat Bulgaria’s Yoto Hristov to earn the 55kg gold medal in a match full of aggressive attacks and tactical level changes.

After a first period takedown, Mommadov produced a shuck and a quick gut wrench in the second to secure a 6-0 triumph.

The bronze medals were won by Uzbekistan’s Islomjon Bakhramov, who defeated Armenia’s Slavik Galstyan, and Turkey’s Altan Abdurahman, up against Hungary’s Erik Torba.

Abdurahman's compatriot Cengiz Ali claimed his first World Championships title at 84kg, ending Azerbaijan’s Islam Abbasov’s hopes of a repeat success.

The Turk kept Abbasov on his toes, forcing his taller opponent to bow his head and fall forward on several occasions.

Sweden’s Zakarias Berg got his hands on a bronze medal by overcoming Georgia’s Girgi Melia, while Hungary’s Bertlan Papp beat Kyrgyzstan’s Asykeev Kazdin to the other.

The action in Salvador da Bahia is due to continue tomorrow with women’s wrestling at 44kg, 51kg, 59kg and 67kg.
