International demand for Rio 2016 tickets is exceeding current levels on sale, the head of one of the major authorised ticket resellers has told insidethegames, although plenty of tickets remain in certain events.

Sydney-based Kingdom Sports Group are authorised resellers in 40 Asian, African and Oceanic countries, with managing director Daniel Beniston revealing in April how they were “thrilled” with sales so far.

There has been good uptake both from corporate customers and from members of the public, he said.

Like other resellers they are now waiting for an additional allocation of tickets, a process hoped to be completed by around the first quarter of next year, after which they may also be able to buy additional tickets from a pool of events still available.

It is up to Rio 2016 to determine exactly how remaining tickets will be distributed, but it is thought possible some could come from extra-seating and others could have been kept in reserve.

Some could also be transferred from domestic sales, particularly in sports, like hockey and rugby sevens, in which there is comparatively less interest from within Brazilian markets.

Interests on a particular sport is dependent on each country, Beniston told insidethegames, citing the example of Kenya in which interest in unsurprisingly focused around athletics.

They still have lots of interest in morning session in athletics, he said, despite the fact that morning finals are to be held in the stadium for the first time since Seoul 1988.

Beniston, speaking from his new Brazilian office of Kingston Sports Group, is also one of over 50 companies with an official licence to make Rio 2016 products, with a series of ties, scarves and bandanas currently being produced.

A retail programme has already started for these, both online and in Rio 2016 stores, with custom-made products also being developed for selective sports, likely to include equestrian, golf and rugby.
