Hosts Morocco marked a fine performance at the AFBC African Confederation Boxing Championships by claiming five of the 10 titles on offer in Casablanca.

Imad Ahyoun got the gold medal trail rolling, overcoming Ghana’s Tetteh Sulemanu with a points win at light flyweight, before Mohamed Hamout claimed victory by the same method against Tunisia’s Bilel Mhamdi at bantamweight.

Morocco’s third title came at welterweight as Mohammed Rabii beat Egypt’s Walid Said Mohamed Sedik Mohame by technical knockout, while World Series of Boxing star Abdeljalil Abouhamda brought up their fourth courtesy of a points win against Algeria’s Chouaib Bouloudinats at heavyweight.

Olympian Mohammed Arjaoui rounded off a memorable evening of boxing for Morocco with victory against Algeria’s Mohamed Grimes at super heavyweight.

There could have been further success for Morocco had Abdelhak Aatakni not lost on points to Algeria’s Abdelkader Chadi in the light welterweight final, and Achraf Kharroubi suffered a walkover defeat against Chadi’s compatriot Mohamed Flissi.

Algeria’s Reda Benbaziz and Abdelhafid Benchabla added an additional two gold medals to their country’s tally as both recorded points victories against Egyptian opponents at lightweight and light heavyweight respectively.

Benbaziz got the better of Mahmoud Abdelaal Mahmoud Abdelaal, while Benchabla proved too strong for Abdelrahman Salah Orabi Abdelgawwad.

Egypt, who tasted defeat in three of the finals, did triumph in the middleweight division as Hosam Hussein Bakr Abdin overcame Botswana’s Chikanda Zibani.
