Dominican Republic completed their recovery at the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Americas Championship by seeing off Uruguay and advancing to the next round.

The Caribbean country lost their opening two games of the tournament to hosts Mexico and Brazil but saw off Panama yesterday before a 90-70 win over the Uruguayans today.

Shooting guard James Feldeine led the way with 17 points for Dominican Republic, who have now completed all four of their opening group phase matches.

With four countries in the five team Group A progressing to the second round group phase, their spot in the next stage is secure and they are only currently behind the Mexicans who have also booked their spot after recording a 100 per cent record so far.

The home side saw off Panama 82-68 at Mexico City's Palacio de los Deportes, which is hosting the tournament, to make it three victories from three matches.

Uruguay, Brazil and Panama now face a battle for the two remaining spots in round two, as each has so far won one game and lost two in the tournament.

Tomorrow's fixtures will see Brazil play Panama in a crucial contest, while Uruguay must face undefeated hosts Mexico.

In Group B the qualifiers have already been decided as Cuba, the first country to complete their four matches, have exited the tournament with a 100 per cent record of defeats.

They were hammered 96-64 by Argentina yesterday with the South American side making it three wins from three to top the group.

Elsewhere, Canada made it two wins from three by beating Venezuela 82-62.

Both countries are also through along with Puerto Rico.

In tomorow's games, Argentina meet Venezuela with Canada and Puerto Rico colliding.

As well as continental glory, qualification places for next year's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are up for grabs in Mexico City.

The two sides to reach the final will book their place, unless Olympic hosts Brazil are one of them which will lead to the third placed side earning a berth at Rio 2016.

The opening round features two groups of five with the top four in each advancing to the second round group.

From there, the top four teams will progress to the semi-finals.
