Britain’s Lorenzo Chiavarini produced the performance of the day as he collected wins in both of the laser races despite a challenging wind and strong current causing problems for the majority of the sailors on day two of the ISAF World Cup in Qingdao.

Chiavarini had posted third and 17th place finishes on the opening day to sit among the main field but he navigated the conditions better than his opposition to move to the top of the standings today on five points, having discarded his poor result from yesterday.

His nearest rival is the Belgian Wannes van Laer, who ended with second and third places finishes on the second day of competition to sit nine points off the lead held by Chiavarini, who revealed he is hoping for similar conditions tomorrow.

"It was pretty tricky and reading the current was pretty important,” he said.

"My starts were pretty solid today as well as my speed.

“I'm looking forward to tomorrow, the weather's probably going to be similar.”

In the women’s laser radial class Canada’s Isabella-Anna Bertold shares the lead after recording two second place finishes to move onto eight points, joint with Japan’s Manami Doi who backed up a first win yesterday by crossing third and fourth on day two.

In the battle for Asian Olympic qualification berths in the Nacra 17 event Singapore’s Justin Liu and Denise Lim continued their impressive form as having earned a hat-trick of wins yesterday they picked up another two today and with their third place finish being discarded they are well clear of their rivals.

China’s Lei Gong is also going strongly in the men’s Finn class after he recorded his second win of the World Cup so far but he will have to ensure he avoids a poor result in the remainder of the week, having been given an 11th place finish in the second race after being deemed to have started prematurely.

Having recently qualified for the Swiss sailing team Mateo Sanz is utilising the World Cup as preparation for an assault at Olympic qualification at the RS:X class World Championships and his form looks promising after impressive results.

Sanz followed up a sixth place in the opening race of the day by coming first and fourth in the remaining two races to earn a one point lead over China’s Li Tao.

However, it is a Chinese one-two in the women’s RS:X event as Jiahui Wu has four wins from six races to move into an eight point lead over Peina Chen, while in the men’s 49er class South Korea’s Bongjin Chae and Dongwook Kim are tied with their compatriots Sungwook Kim and Hoyeob Yang.

China’s Hao Lan and Chao Wang have taken the lead in the men’s 470 class with first and fourth places finishes seeing them overtake Onan Barreiros and Juan Curbelo Cabrera and open up a three point lead on the Spanish duo.

Meanwhile in the women’s 470 class, Japan’s Ai Kondo Yoshida and Miho Yoshioka lead the standings having picked up six points across the two days, with home favourites Shasha Chen and Haiyan Gao lying second on eight points.
