Beijing 2008 Olympic gold medallists the United States and reigning world champions Poland continued their fine starts to their International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Men’s World Cup campaigns as both nations picked up their seventh victories in Japan today.

The American side were involved in a tough encounter with Iran, who made life hard for their opponents throughout what was an intriguing contest in Osaka.

The Iranians took the lead by claiming the first set 25-20 before the United States launched a rousing comeback, eventually sealing a 20-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21 success to maintain their superb start to the tournament.

Poland, who claimed gold at the FIVB World Championships on home soil in 2014, faced no such trouble against Egypt as they cruised to a straight sets win.

The Polish outfit began in confident style and clinched the opener 25-20, setting the tone for what proved to be a comfortable victory in Toyama.

They went on to seal the second set by a 25-18 margin before they made it seven wins out of seven thanks to taking the third by the same scoreline.

Both the United States and Poland remain on course for a flawless opening stage and are in pole position to secure a spot at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro alongside hosts Brazil.

Elsewhere, Russia ensured they kept within touching distance of the top two sides as they recorded their sixth win of the event by beating Canada in straight sets.

The Russians were in dominant mood throughout the match, sweeping aside their opponents 25-21, 25-16, 25-19 thanks to a commanding display, in which Dmitriy Muserskiy scored 16 points.

The other team on six victories and one loss are Italy, who are chasing their first FIVB World Cup crown in two decades, after they cruised to a 25-18, 25-23, 25-22 success over Tunisia.

Hosts Japan were also victorious in straight sets against Venezuela as they edged a close contest 33-31, 26-24, 25-19, while Australia beat Argentina 25-21, 25-23, 25-16.
