Stunning comeback sees United States shock Europe to win Solheim Cup

The United States completed a spectacular comeback to beat Europe and win The Solheim Cup at the St Leon-Rot golf course in Germany.

Going into the competition ending singles the Americans found themselves 10-6 behind but they proceeded to win eight of the 12 games on their way to a memorable 14½-13½ triumph.

Europe won just three matches while one was halved as they lost what seemed like an insurmountable advantage.

Gerina Piller of the US holed a crucial ten foot putt to win her game 1 up against German Caroline Masson on the 18th hole, which proved to be absolutely pivotal.

Masson had earlier missed a putt to halve the match, which would have been enough to see Europe retain the Cup, but in the end it wasn't to be.

Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie, Cristie Kerr, Angela Stanford and Lizette Salas all won for the US against Sandra Gall, Caroline Hedwall, Charley Hull, Suzann Pettersen and Azahara Muñoz respectively.

Alison Lee and Morgan Pressel were also victorious against Europe's Gwladys Nocera and Catriona Matthew respectively to spark wild scenes of celebration.

Anna Nordqvist, Melissa Reid and Karine Icher were the three European winners over Stacy Lewis, Brittany Lang and Brittany Lincicome respectively while the contest between American Lexi Thompson and Europe's Carlota Ciganda was halved.

Europe held an 8-5 overnight lead with today's play starting with the resumption of three fourballs games which couldn't finish yesterday due to fading light.

Icher and Matthew completed a 2&1 win over Salas and Lang and Pettersen and Hull beat Lee and Lincicome 2 up to add two further points to Europe's tally while Lewis and Piller claimed a crucial American point by winning 1 up against Masson and Hedwall.

Pettersen and Hull's win was embroiled in controversy after Lee picked up the ball, thinking Europe had conceded the hole.

However, Pettersen said that wasn't the case and the hole was awarded to the hosts.

This sparked anger in the American camp but they responded in the best possible way in the singles.

The Solheim Cup is the women's equivalent of the Ryder Cup, pitting teams from Europe and the US together across three days.
