Egypt claimed a shock win over Angola in Group B ©FIBA

Egypt ended Angola’s 18-match unbeaten run at the Women’s AfroBasket after triumphing at the end of a thrilling Group B match in Cameroon's capital Yaounde today.

There proved to be nothing to separate the two teams in the opening two quarters of the clash with the half-time score seeing the teams locked at 27-all.

However, Egypt scored 15 points to their opponents' 11 in the third quarter to move to the verge of a stunning win.

Angola responded by displaying the form that had helped them to claim back-to-back AfroBasket titles by outscoring the Egyptians in the final quarter of the match, but they ultimately came up a point short with their rivals triumphing 53-52.

Both teams are set to progress from the six-team group having recorded three wins and one defeat from their first four matches, with Nigeria also boasting the same tally having beaten Senegal 75-64 in their tie today.

Despite their defeat Senegal also look likely to seal one of four qualification spots for the quarter-finals, although Guinea boosted their prospects by earning their first ever win at AfroBasket with their match ending 67-66 to leave their opponents Algeria winless.

Meanwhile, Cameroon maintained their unbeaten start to the tournament as they swept aside Gabon 67-56 to continue to hold top spot in Group A.

Mali though maintained their hopes of ending the group phase top of the standings as they moved into second place courtesy of their 57-52 victory over Mozambique and they have a winnable tie against Uganda left to play.

Gabon and Mozambique are still well placed in the group ahead of their final games but could potentially be overtaken by Uganda after they overcame South Africa 55-43 in a battle between the two previously winless teams.
