Rome 2024 has illuminated the city’s world famous Trevi Fountain to celebrate the Italian capital’s candidacy for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

A seven minute show is being screened every evening at the landmark until December 19, which aims to entertain the city’s residents and tourists with a colourful 3D light display which promises a flavour of Rome 2024’s vision.

The show is being played at three separate times at the largest Baroque fountain in the city, at 8pm, 9pm and 9.30pm.

Featuring several of the city’s landmarks, such as the Colosseum, the 3D performance draws to a conclusion by displaying Italian athletes competing at previous Summer and Winter Olympic Games, prior to the new Rome 2024 logo being revealed.

The design, which features the famous Colosseum in the colours of the country's flag, was unveiled on Monday (December 14) and has been created to represent the whole of Italy rather than just the capital.

It was unveiled live on television in Italy in front of 2,500 Roman schoolchildren at the Palazzetto dello Sport, where speeches were made by bid President Luca di Montezemolo and Giovanni Malago, President of the Italian National Olympic Committee.

Montezemolo had stated that the city needed to display its “culture, beauty, technology and the enthusiasm of our young people.”

The illumination also features the hashtag #WEWANTRome2024 as the candidate city seeks to build support.

Engaging the local population has proved a difficult task for the 2024 hopefuls so far, with the United States Olympic Committee opting to drop Boston as their candidate for the Games in August following public opposition, and changing to Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Hamburg 2024 were forced to withdraw after a failed bid to win a referendum to ratify their bid in the German city last month.

Yesterday, it was also revealed that Paris 2024’s crowdfunding scheme was more than €9 million (£6.6 million/$9.8 million) short of its target of 10 million (£7 million/$11 million).

Calls for a referendum on Budapest’s bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games are also be gathering pace in Hungary.

The International Olympic Committee are due to choose the host city at its Session in Lima in 2017.
