England, Singapore, Wales and hosts India booked their place in the semi-finals of the women’s competition at the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships in Surat.

Singapore earned back-to-back victories over England and Sri Lanka in Group E of the event to finish top, with their team of Zhou Yihan, Yee Herng Hwee and Pearlyn Koh impressing in their singles matches.

Yihan proved to be the only one of the three to suffer a defeat, as she lost 11-6, 11-5, 11-1 to England’s England's Karina Le Fevre, but it would not prevent to top seeds from earning comfortable progression.

Despite tasting defeat, England were able to overcome Sri Lanka in their second tie of the day to seal second spot.

It saw them set up a last four encounter with India, who began the day with a 3-0 victory over Wales in Group F.

The hosts then defeated Cyprus by the same scoreline to seal top spot, while Wales were able to defeat the Cypriot team in a crunch tie to book a semi-final date with Singapore.

Meanwhile, following the completion of two of their three second stage group matches both England and Singapore have sealed places in the men’s semi-finals.

Both teams’ players won each of their three singles matches against Trinidad and Tobago and South Africa to ensure their progression.

England and Singapore will complete their group stages matches by playing each other tomorrow, with the winners set to face an easier semi-final tie.

The second place nation look likely to meet India, after the host nation’s team of Soumajit Ghosh, Anthony Amalraj and G. Sathiyan earned 3-0 wins over Sri Lanka and Northern Ireland.

They will finish the group with a clash against Scotland, who earned a 3-1 victory over Sri Lanka but then suffered a 3-2 loss to Northern Ireland.

The victory for Northern Ireland kept their hopes of progression alive, with a win over Sri Lanka likely to be enough to take them into the last four.
