Rahel Enzler led the way with a goal and an assist, with a shot in the opening period rebounding to Jessica Schlegal, who made no mistake.

The French had multiple chances to draw level, but a bad giveaway in the third period allowed Enzler to stroke home to double the advantage.

Switzerland had many more chances but were unable to open further daylight largely thanks to Anaid Aurard, the French goalkeeper who stopped 38 out of 40 shots.

Her team were ultimately outclassed, however, in what was their third loss to the Swiss in four days.

It powered Switzerland to a 2-0 victory in the best of three relegation series to ensure they will remain in the top division of the World Championships.

France, who were only promoted last year, drop back into Division 1.

"We're happy with the win, for sure," Enzler said.

"We fought as a team, and even when we were up 1-0 we didn't lose our composure."

"I was very happy."

United States will face Sweden and Canada will face Russia in the two semi-finals later tonight before a final tomorrow.
