World Series of Boxing debutantes Türkiye Conquerors battled back from 2-0 down to secure an opening night victory against visiting China Dragons in Istanbul today.

The first contest of this season's World Series was an exciting affair but things got off to a bad start for the new team when the Dragons’ light flyweight He Junjun defeated Turkish southpaw Hamza Kartal.

He was given the points victory by all three judges after five rounds and the hosts then suffered a second defeat as 19-year-old bantamweight Hakan Cigdem was beaten by  Xu Boxiang.

A huge shot from Xu rocked the teenager in the opening round and a one-sided affair was ended via technical knock-out in round four.

That meant that the Conquerors needed to win all three remaining fights to triumph and things started well when London 2012 Olympian Yakup Sener claimed a unanimous points victory at light welterweight over Meng Caicheng.

The tie was then level when middleweight Evren Tibukoglu beat Zhao Minggang, a boxer five years older than him at 28, with a series of uppercuts proving to be key on the way to another unanimous points victory.

It then all came down to the heavyweight clash between home fighter Seyda Keser and Yu Fengkai, and it proved to be a mis-match as the Conquerors man knocked down his opponent in round two before the Chinese team threw in the towel.
