David Drahoninsky of the Czech Republic and Great Britain’s Jessica Stretton both set new world records during the qualification round at the Fazza International Para Archery Championship in Dubai.

The Beijing 2008 Paralympic champion Drahoninsky fired rounds of 334 and 342 in the men’s W1 open compound event for a combined total of 676 points, two more than his previous mark for the 72-arrow round at 50 metres.

Fifteen-year-old Stretton broke the equivalent women’s record after scoring a total of 649 points, one more than the old mark set by fellow Briton and reigning world champion Joanna Frith.

"I just shot my best but did not expect to break the world record," Stretton, bronze medallist at last year’s World Para Archery Championships in Germany, told Emirates247.com.

"It’s an amazing feeling."

Britain’s John Walker and Finland’s Jean-Pierre Antonios were among the other top-performers in the men’s event with 647 and 646, while Victoria Jenkins fired a personal best in the women’s.

Jenkins shot 331 to lead her team-mates Stretton and Frith by 11 points after the first round before finishing with a total of 636.

Frith, who is recovering from a neck injury suffered earlier this week, ultimately came ahead of Jenkins with 638.

A total of 15 countries are competing at the second edition of the Championship, which has gained the recognition of World Archery and attracted a record number of 50 athletes.

Britain’s contingent of 14 athletes is the largest as they continue preparations for April’s European Para Archery Championships in Challans, France.

The Championship is organised and supervised by the Dubai Club for the Disabled with the strategic partnership and support of the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center and in cooperation with the Dubai Sports Council, the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare and the UAE Paralympic Committee.
