The tournament in Doha also serves as a qualification event for this summer's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and the success of the two countries means that Australia's hopes are at an end.

Jordan drew 0-0 with the Australians - their second goalless draw in a row - to sneak through in second place in Group D on five points with the Olyroos left on four.

The UAE, meanwhile, who only needed a draw to progress, beat already eliminated Vietnam 3-2 to ensure their passage through.

They top the group on seven points, while the Vietnamese will go home without a point after three straight defeats.

Next up for Jordan will be a last-eight clash with Group C winners South Korea - the bronze medallists at London 2012 who enjoyed a memorable penalty shoot-out win over hosts Great Britain at that tournament.

The UAE, who lost 3-1 to the British at Wembley Stadium at the London Games, have booked a date with Iraq. 

They experienced a nervy time of it against Vietnam, however, and fell behind when Ngyuen Cong Phuong tucked away a 24th minute penalty which was conceded after Mohamed Surour handled in the area at the Grand Hamad Stadium.

The Emirati outfit lost two players to injury in the first half and had to wait until after the hour mark for a leveller, which came in fortuitous circumstances as Pham Hoang Lam scored an own-goal.

If they thought that breakthrough would turn the tide of the contest they were to be wrong, as Vietnam re-took the lead thanks to a Nguyen Van Dung strike on 68 minutes.

The lead only lasted five minutes, though, as Mohamed Al Akberi pulled the UAE level again before things got worse for the Vietnamese as Luong Xuan Truong was sent-off after blocking a goal bound effort with his hands. 

Al Hashmi tucked away the resultant spot kick, and Vietnam were then reduced to nine after Nguyen Nam Anh was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Australia, who will now miss their second Olympic tournament in a row, were left to rue a late chance in their stalemate when Jamie MacLaren's header came back off the crossbar at the Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium,

The Jordanians knew that a point would be enough for them and successfully strangled the life out of the game from the opening whistle.

The tournament will now take a break tomorrow before the quarter-finals are due begin on Friday (January 22).

Japan will meet Iran in the first clash, before hosts Qatar take on North Korea.

The remaining two last eight matches will be played on Saturday (January 23) with the top three ranked teams at the tournament earning their place at the Olympics.
