Germany broke Norwegian hearts to end the run of the giant killers and reach the final of the European Men’s Handball Championships in sensational fashion this evening at Kraków's Tauron Arena.

They will face Spain in the final on Sunday (January 31) after they overcame Croatia in the second semi-final.

Norway, who beat Olympic champions France to make last four, were hoping for another shock, and led by an outstanding performance by goalkeeper Ole Erevik, who made 16 saves in total, they proved tough opponents once again.

After a steady start, German broke clear to lead 9-5 before Norway back to trail by just one point at 14-13 down at half-time.

Norway took the lead soon after, before tactical substitutions brought the Germans back into the game.

They levelled proceedings at 26-26 and then 27-27 to ensure the first overtime period in semi-final history at the tournament.

Both sides traded goals before the decisive strike from Kai Häfner in the final moments of the first overtime period sealed the win.

The second match was not quite as close but still proved exciting.

Spain cruised into the lead in the first half and went into the break 18-14 ahead before Croatia fought back to prevent clear daylight opening.

They never quite got close enough, however, and Spain hung on for a 33-29 victory.

Croatia will now face Norway for the bronze medal.

It was also semi-finals day at the African Men’s Championships in Cairo today.

Tunisia first overcame North African rivals Algeria 27-18 before the Egyptian hosts beat Angola 25-15.

Both the final and bronze medal match are due to take place at the Cairo Stadium Indoor Halls Complex tomorrow.
