The 16-year-old from Plymouth plans to compete in only the 3 metre springboard on Sunday (August 22) but will skip the 10m platform two days later on August 24.

The news will come as a huge boost to organisers as Daley is one of the highest profile athletes competing at the Games but there will be disappointment that he is missing his specialist event.

His showdown against China's Qiu Bo, the 2008 world junior champion who Daley pipped to claim the senior title in Rome 12 months ago, was set to be the highest quality competition of these Games.

Daley had also won the European title in the 10m platform at the 2008 European Championships in Eindhoven.

Daley’s participation in Singapore was thrown into doubt last week when he pulled out of the European Championships in Budapest with a triceps tear following a mistimed dive.

A statement released here today said: "The British Olympic Association announced today that Team GB diving athlete Tom Daley intends to compete in the Youth Olympic Games 3m Springboard competition on Sunday 22nd August.

"However, Daley will not compete in the 10m Platform competition on Tuesday 24th August, largely as a precaution as he continues to recover from a tricep injury suffered earlier this month during the European Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

"The decision regarding participation in the Youth Olympic Games is taken by Diving Team Leader Andy Banks and Tom Daley."
