Fashion designers Dsquared2 will design Canadian kit for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on behalf of sponsor Hudson Bay, it has been announced.

The label, set-up by Toronto-born twins Dean and Dan Caten, custom-designed an outfit wore by Beyoncé at her recent Super Bowl half-time performance.

But the company faced criticism last year over a fashion line, marketed with the name dsquaw, featuring stereotypical indiginous outfits.

It was criticised for denigrating these cultures.

It was admitted that the line had been inspired by "Canadian Indian tribes", but all references to dsquaw were subsequently removed from the Dsquared2 website, as well as from Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts.

The appointment has thus been criticised on social media, although others have been more supportive.

"The Opening Ceremony represents a moment of tremendous national pride for our athletes," said Hudson Bay President Liz Rodbell.

"We want them to feel strong and confident as they march into the stadium and we are excited that the Dsquared2-designed look will give them that extra boost of Canadian cool."

The Caten twins said they were constantly inspired by Canada,

"It is an honour to partner with Hudson Bay in dressing Team Canada," they said in a joint statement.

"The Opening Ceremony look is made with our passion for our birth country mixed with the energetic spirit of Dsquared2."

The collection, which will be worn by athletes competing in Rio, is expected to be unveiled in April.
