Carl Lewis, a nine-time Olympic gold medallist, and Andre Agassi, winner of eight Grand Slams, are among 53 members of the Los Angeles 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Athletes' Advisory Commission unveiled at a special ceremony here today.

Lewis was also an eight-time world champion and was voted "Sportsman of the Century" by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1999.

Agassi also won a home Olympic singles gold medal at Atlanta 1996, is one of the most successful American players in history.

Both are controversial choices, however, due to their respective links to doping.

In 2009, Agassi admitted in his autobiography that he had lied to tennis authorities about his use of crystal methamphetamine to escape a ban, admitting he used the drug with former assistant "Slim" in 1997.

Lewis, meanwhile, admitted in 2003 that he had failed three tests for a stimulant at the 1988 US Olympic trials, which under international rules at the time should have ruled him out of the Seoul Games two months later.

He claims he was just one of "hundreds" of American athletes who were allowed to escape bans at the time by the United States Olympic Committee.

He crossed the line second in the subsequent 100 metres final in the South Korean capital but was awarded the gold medal and a world record of 9.92sec after Canadian rival Ben Johnson failed a doping test in what is now considered "the dirtiest race in history".

The Athletes' Advisory Commission will aim to "ensure the top American and international athletes in the US are deeply involved in every aspect of its bid and helping to create a state-of-the-art, personalized experience for Olympic and Paralympic athletes in 2024".

Collectively, its members have won 216 Olympic and Paralympics medals, consisting of 142 gold, 49 silver and 25 bronze

They will "provide broad communication and feedback across every activity of the bid; represent and promote the rights and interests of athletes in LA 2024’s decision-making process; and support LA 2024 by promoting the positive values of sport and Olympism to youth across the country and, later, around the world."

Gold medal winning athletics stars are among other members, including sprinters Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix, hurdler Dawn Harper-Nelson and decathlete Bryan Clay, along with another tennis player, seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams.

Another member is golfer Rickie Fowler, who has admitted he would rather win a Major than an Olympic gold medal.

American rower and IOC Executive Board member Anita DeFrantz is another noteworthy choice, along with beach volleyball player Kerri Walsh Jennings, gymnast Jordan Weiber and swimmer Katie Ledecky.

International stars also feature, including Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci, best known as the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 in an Olympic event at Montreal 1976.

German tennis player Steffi Graf, the wife of Agassi and the 1988 Olympic gold medallist, is also included, along with Brazilian swimmer Thiago Pereira, a silver medallist at London 2012.

Another member is Fabien Lefèvre, a slalom canoeist who switched nationality from rival bidding nation France to the US in 2013.

“As a four-time Olympian who understands that athletes are the Olympic and Paralympic Games’ most important stakeholders, I joined the LA 2024 team to help guarantee that athletes have a strong voice in the development and planning of the Games Concept," said Janet Evans, the four-time Olympic swimming champion who is the bid's director of athlete relations and vice-chair.

"I can say with the utmost confidence that the group we’re presenting here today will be front and centre as we create the most personalised experience ever for Olympians and Paralympians.

“The LA 2024 AAC has a real and vital role to play in our bid.

"We provide input to all areas of the Games Concept, and we provide insight that only Olympians and Paralympians can.

"I am extremely honoured to be here today with all of these great champions, and I know that together, we can bring the Games back to LA in 2024.”

Evans was joined by almost 30 members of the panel in an unveiing ceremony today, including Lewis, Comeneci and 12-time Paralympic medalist and bid vice-chair, Candace Cable.

Also present was Los Angeles 2024 chairman Casey Wasserman and IOC Athletes' Commission member Angela Ruggiero and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Los Angeles is up against Budapest, Paris and Rome in a four-horse race due to be awarded the Games at the 2017 IOC Session in Lima.
